“I will always speak Russian”: Kindergarten teacher fired in Latvia after vice-mayor’s complaint In Riga, kindergarten teacher Olga Sokolova lost her job after posting TikTok videos where she criticized Latvia’s language policy and refused to speak Latvian. Despite knowing the language, she said she deliberately speaks Russian as a form of protest against the authorities’ actions. Her videos caught the attention of Riga Vice-Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis, who personally contacted the kindergarten administration and promised “appropriate measures.” “The kindergarten teacher who publicly spoke disrespectfully about the Latvian language has resigned and left the Riga school system,” Ķirsis later wrote. Latvia’s Ministry of Education reminded educators that they are required to follow professional ethics standards — including in their public statements.
