Sunderland finishing 7th—5 points & 5 positions ahead of Newcastle—and qualifying for Europe—in their first season back in the top-flight—is an amazing achievement, esp when you consider that in the last two seasons the three promoted teams were all relegated back to the 2nd tier

It's reasonably likely we will rejoin at some point given huge age skew in support for Brexit and geopolitical trends But it's not going to happen quickly both because EU won't want us back until UK public opinion clearly in favour and neither left nor right bloc aligned on it

@NickCohen4 @jameshawes2 Everyone who makes this argument ignores how voters turn more reactionary as they get older.
Eg. the pensioner vote for Tories.
I thought it folly to leave. Given antics of current Spanish government, on top of post Covid immigration flood, perhaps not such folly now.

@NickCohen4 One could make a similar argument for the end the the United Kingdom. So should we rejoin the EU as individual nations (and Northern Ireland as part of a United Ireland) or as the UK?

The Conservative Party has become a local party with a few outposts of remaining strength, almost all of them in London or at least the South East. And yet they seem to be unaware of this fact, which is odd given it is so obvious.

In 2019, the Conservatives received 34% of the votes in Makerfield. In 2024, they received 11% of the vote. Now a Survation poll has them on just 2%. This is why I find the “we’re back” narrative to be completely bonkers. Outside of London, it’s non existent.

That’s exactly why extremists, oligarchs and foreign influence networks work so hard to keep Europe fragmented, paranoid and internally divided.
