A dedicated public servant, Cline had been with the Bureau for over seven years; he was the first officer to be killed at USP Alcatraz. Members of the Mid-Atlantic Region DCT and SORT participated in an international skills competition in Moundsville, West Virginia, for the annual Mock Prison Riot. On May 5, 2026, during Correctional Workers’ Week, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) gathered to honor and remember the 27 corrections professionals who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This memorial service is BOP’s opportunity to reflect on their courage, service and enduring commitment to public safety. “Behind the badge, we are all human beings.” Corrections fatigue is more than being tired, it’s the physical, mental, and emotional wear and tear of constantly showing up when energy is low. Recently, a local church took a moment to show their appreciation for the staff at the #FCCFlorence by distributing hot coffee and pastries to employees as they entered the facility. Sometimes it’s the simple things, a cup of coffee at 5am, a kind word, or just a moment to pause and say thank you. #StaffAppreciation

📜 FBOP: This Day in History👮 On May 14, 1930, President Herbert Hoover signed the law establishing the Federal Bureau of Prisons, creating the foundation for the modern federal correctional system. The Bureau’s creation followed key developments in the 1920s. Assistant Attorney General Mabel Walker Willebrandt championed the establishment of a youth facility in Chillicothe and a women’s reformatory in Alderson, and she recognized the need for centralized oversight of federal prisons. In 1928, James V. Bennett, who would later become the Bureau’s second Director, conducted a landmark study that exposed overcrowding and the lack of meaningful inmate programs across the federal prison system. This morning, @BOPDirector Marshall, alongside @BOPDepDirector Smith and @NIC_DOJ Director Mirandy, participated in the U.S. Department of Justice’s All Sheriffs Authority Meeting where public and private partners met to develop comprehensive plans to tackle national public safety priorities.

Deputy Director Smith sat down for an onstage conversation with Doug Deason, President of the Deason Foundation, hosted by Prison Fellowship, as well as delivered keynote remarks at the HOPE for Prisoners Gala. Both initiatives aim to honor transformation and bring leaders and returning citizens together who believe in redemption, restoration, and reconciliation. #Reentry

Last week, @BOPDepDirector Smith visited FCC Lompoc for a multi‑day engagement with staff and leadership across the complex. Joined by the Warden and executive team, the Deputy Director toured housing units, program areas, farm operations, education services, food services, and other mission‑critical departments. The visit also included staff recalls, inmate recalls, and opportunities to speak directly with staff.
