The name Sāyaṇa seems to have been especially favoured in the early history of the Vijayanagara Empire. We all know the great Sāyaṇācārya, who wrote commentaries on the Vedas and served as a minister to Bukka I and his successors.
But he was not the only Sāyaṇa. Among the Sangama brothers who established the kingdom, four of the five had a son named Sāyaṇa. Although no record tells us why, it is entirely possible that they did so out of their deep regard for the ācārya.
