✍️ “The rise of Calsher Dear” ⏪ 2023 National Draft. With their last pick, #56, Hawthorn selects 195cm key forward Calsher Dear (Father-Son) from the Sandringham Dragons/Beaumaris. Dear was spoken about by many as a “project player” who would take time to develop in the VFL. After just 5 games for Box Hill where he averaged a modest 1.8 goals, 5 marks and 4 tackles, the coach made a big decision. ⏩ Round 8, 2024. The Debut. With Mabior Chol & Mitch Lewis out injured & the 1-6 Hawks sitting 17th on the ladder, Sam Mitchell decided to give 18-year old Dear an opportunity. He finished the game with 8 disposals. 5 marks. 2.1 & most importantly, a win! ⏩ Season 2025. This season has been challenging for Dear. In February, he was diagnosed with stress fractures in his back & missed the majority of Hawthorn’s pre-season. He returned to AFL action in Round 11 against the Gold Cast Suns, replacing the “managed” Jack Gunston. After just 5 disposals & 1 mark, he was subbed, then omitted the next week. After being dropped, Dear went back to the VFL & dominated, earning a recall for the Hawk’s Round 18 clash against the Dockers. He finished the game with a team & equal game high 3 goals & has backed it up in the past fortnight, kicking 5.2. Since debuting against the Western Bulldogs, Dear has played 21 games & kicked 32.15. In his last 9 games, he’s kicked 19 goals, including 3.4 in his first final & multiple goals in 7 of those games. The Hawk’s win/loss record with Dear in the team is 16-5.
