@PrasFrancis You are literally making the argument for no race based influences in applications/evaluations. Otherwise everyone is going to want to game it in some kind of race Olympics. Race based preferential treatment is both illegal and unethical

Reminder that when white people think their competition is Black and Hispanic kids with lower test scores, they want GPA/standardized tests weighted more and when they think their competition is Asian kids they want them weighted less. insidehighered.com/news/2013/08/1…

The actual purpose of banning the SAT/ACT is so that the incoming class at any given elite university isn't 70% Asian. It has nothing to do with trying to keep white people out at all, contrary to what every moron on this site thinks

@iamgabesanchez He is not paying rent and it’s a family members house. He didn’t own his house in the palisades either. Also renting.

Well, I do! It’s mostly just an extension of the keyboard warrior thing. Everyone has a lot to say online, especially right wing types. Lotta bluster. No can do when you ask them to front it up on a mic!
Kyle Mizen@KyleMizen

@NotJackKemp it's emblematic of the more global problem: people don't like being challenged.

@NotJackKemp Conservatives are scarred from 2018-2024 when mainstream views publicly expressed subjected your job to danger as many people on the left felt comfortable attacking you personally and professionally for heterodox views. The very public assassinations/attempts also didn’t help.

In my experience it is hard to get people with far right views to sit down with you. I have an open invite, if you have any level of following and are a public conservative, I would like to have you on a Biz Wednesday. The problem is they won’t do it

Beyond the billionaire debate, it's a real problem that every podcast is now a hugbox with 99% agreement and nodding along to whatever your guest says. Bring back actual debate. We used to do William Buckley vs Gore Vidal throwdowns. Give us podcasts that ask hard questions.

Trump says Iran is asking for things he "can't agree with." But in reality, what he means is that he doesn't **want** to to agree to them. Ultimately, however, this is a negotiation. Both sides would have to swallow stuff they say they would never accept. The only question is about how would have to be more flexible: Iran or the US.

@dccommonsense @based_yeoman Consider inverting your question to test your point here. In your world view, who can’t? Is there a country that can act crazy enough that the world cannot allow it?

1. This "do you want Iran to have nukes?!" argument wonderfully obscures the much thornier larger question: This is an 80 year old weapons technology that (ostensibly) no one who doesn't already have it is allowed to. How long is that a tenable situation? Permanent inferiority?

@GerberKawasaki Congrats on the weather and scenery? California is the equivalent of being born on third base and thinking you hit a triple. The fact that you have the best climate and views on the planet and still have negative net migration is truly incredible. Bravo

@dccommonsense @based_yeoman If answer is “worse off”, then move to calculus of “ok how much pain are you willing to take to keep status quo as compared to how much “worse off” you would be with that party with nuclear weapons.

@dccommonsense @based_yeoman 1/2 I don’t understand how this is an actual substantive response to the question specific to Iran. Seems like using an abstract so you don’t have to answer harder questions. Evaluation should be “are you worse or better off if [insert country has nuclear weapons”.

Only thanks to two abnormally warm winters and the miracle of US shale gas (invented by a couple of nutters backed by high risk capital, peak US) that Europe did not need energy rationing after Russia throttled supplies. As usual, France missed a good opportunity to be quiet.
Javier Blas@JavierBlas

It's 10 years since the US revolutionized the LNG market. But I'm old enough to remember when several European countries, most notably France, looked at **legal means** to ban imports of American LNG because it came from fracking. That was in 2016. Ah, how the world changes.

@dccommonsense This would be more persuasive if you had been saying the same things previously when the executive was massively overreaching. The failure to do so now makes you look partisan and understandably frustrated at your vulnerability to these types of attacks. Btw, otherwise a big fan

The argument most popular among MAGA folk on this app actually has a name: "tu quoque" (basically "you too"). It's a way to avoid actually defending something and instead suggest that both sides do it. Because if they don't try to make that work, they'd have to ACTUALLY defend it.

@PrasFrancis @mattyglesias Wow. “I like this level of voter disenfranchisement because my team wins. I’m so entrenched in my tribalism that I want to take even more people’s rights to democratic representation away. Remember I’m the good guy, though.”

@mattyglesias This is the first time I can remember of Democrats using their leverage to not just fight back to detente with Republicans, but push further to achieve a bigger goal. Do you think there are other areas where they could follow this paradigm - and how do we convince them to do it?

@JohnJHarwood @WilliamCohan @nytimes no idea of any the details of this latest story but I will say,The fact that you (harwood) want to shape the narrative so quickly is because that narrative will fall apart quickly… I will bet whatever sum that as the details emerge it’s way different than how you portray it?
