I once applied for a scholarship on pure delusion. During the interview they asked, “What makes you different?” I said, “I’m resourceful.” They said, “Can you give an example?” I said, “I once survived an entire semester using one pen.” They blinked. I added, “It taught me resilience.” For some reason, they loved that. Then they asked, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” I said, “Building something that outlives me.” I meant maybe a small business. They thought I meant a foundation. I won. The letter said: “We were inspired by your clarity of vision.” I was inspired by my audacity.

A lot of Rwandan men (my age) grew up in homes where fathers were emotionally distant and barely lifted a finger when it came to housework or childcare. Women and girls were expected to cook, clean, and care for everyone, while boys are not expected to help as much. It seems normal until those boys grow into men and marry in Western societies. Suddenly, being “a good man” means sharing house chores, changing diapers, and being emotionally present. But many of these men never saw their fathers do any of that. There’s no mode, just pressure and confusion and conflict, and I’ve seen many marriages in our community suffer because of this. The sooner our men in the diaspora recognize this and seek guidance or mentorship, the better their family lives will be!

It’s just 3 months in Kenya and every time I say I’m Rwandan,it feels like the room shrinks.Not because I mean to ; the pride is too big to hide. Being Rwandan feels like a flex too loud for silence. Thank you, @PaulKagame, for a country that makes me feel royal 🇷🇼❤️.
