I should've added, I spoke about the US bc I'm most familiar with the laws and struggles here, but I do try to pay attention to policies that affect disabled people elsewhere and I do not think this is a US specific thing. It's just not my comfort zone and I'm foggy.

@twitchyspoonie It's disgusting that the disabled in the US have to fear this. It's so interesting that Trump has cognitive decline & would be institutionalized in his condition if he wasn't a powerful person, yet those with the same condition is subject to institutionalization.

Doctors told my mom she was “stressed”
She was covered in bruises from intense itching. Had back pain and trouble breathing.
Turns out it was stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
She died at 48.
I’ve spent my whole life fighting for healthcare.
It’s exhausting. And wrong.

I posted this to a reply in this thread, but I wanted to share the experience here as well. It illustrates a fundamental lack of medical diagnostic skills in the industry. My wife began having trouble breathing last January. At her first doctor’s visit, she was told it was bronchitis and given antibiotics. When she didn’t improve, we went to urgent care, where they doubled down on the same diagnosis. We followed up with her GP, who performed an EKG but ordered no additional tests and offered no diagnosis. We went back to urgent care again, and again, nothing was done. Between January and April, she also saw a cardiologist and an allergist, yet still no one diagnosed her cancer. Out of desperation, we finally went to the ER in April. The initial diagnosis there was heartburn, I’m not joking. When I pleaded with the doctor to do something, anything, he agreed to order an MRI. When he returned to the room, he was pale white. He said, and this is a direct quote, “You have Stage IV cancer. It’s everywhere. I couldn’t give you a worse diagnosis and I’m sorry.” She was gone four months later.

The fallout from this will affect all disabled people. We're living in a time where 504 is being attacked in many states, where institutionalization is being expanded and it's seen as ok to be violent towards especially Black mentally ill people to "combat homelessness".
