Rice sits at the heart of Africa’s food security challenge and opportunity. Driven by population growth, rising incomes, and urbanization, demand is projected to surge over the coming decades. Africa already imports around 15 million tons of rice annually, accounting for roughly 40% of continental consumption. By 2033, imports are projected to rise by 56%, positioning Africa as the world’s largest rice-importing region and accounting for 40% of global rice imports. Reversing this trend will require a decisive productivity push: improving water-use efficiency, expanding irrigation, scaling adoption of drought-resistant varieties, and strengthening aggregation, processing, and milling capacity to boost competitiveness and reduce import dependence.
