"In Idaho prisons, more than two dozen women say guards prey on them with little fear of consequences — and those who speak up are often punished." The U.S. is a leader in women's incarceration, and behind bars, women are anything but safe. 🧵 investigatewest.org/staff-sexual-a…

Nearly half of people with multiple arrests have incomes below $10,000/year, according to 2017 data. The carceral system perpetuates poverty. It's time to support communities instead of locking them up.

Black & brown kids do not have a greater propensity toward lawbreaking. Instead, they are targeted for surveillance, arrest, and punishment in ways that white kids are not. The racially disproportionate confinement of children starts with policing, not criminality.

🚨NEW: On any given day, nearly 32,000 kids are confined away from home – and most are in restrictive facilities that look & feel a lot like adult prisons and jails Our new report gives the most up-to-date picture on youth confinement in the U.S. 🧵 prisonpolicy.org/reports/youth2…

#SB457 is a dangerous step backward. It was amended behind closed doors and rolls back years of reform! We cannot afford the human or financial cost of mass incarceration. This bill must DIE today. #KillSB457 #NVLeg

#SB457 will only add more strain to an under-resourced system, while creating more barriers for people trying to rebuild their lives. We need policies that offer real solutions—not ones that repeat the failed approaches of the past. @KenDGray1 @returnstrongnv

We strongly support #AB91 because people change. Extreme sentences deny the reality of rehabilitation & the human capacity for redemption. AB91 offers hope, reunification, and restoration. It must be amended & passed—not left to die. #NVLeg #SecondChances

What’s worse: Nevada recovers *less than 0.0008%* of that debt, spending more trying to collect than it brings in. Low collection rates= more time & $$ are spent collecting the uncollectible.

Right now, people leaving prison are billed for medical care they received behind bars. That debt makes it harder to: ❌ Pay existing court-ordered obligations ❌ Provide for their families ❌ Stay on track after release

🚨 Big win in Nevada: SB 88 passed the Senate! This bill would end a broken practice that buries people in medical debt—hurting families, wasting gov. money, and making it harder to meet court obligations like restitution. 🧵👇

A reminder during National Police Week: Police contact of any kind is not innocuous. Most police killings start with officers responding to a suspected non-violent situation or a case where no crime has been reported. prisonpolicy.org/blog/2024/12/1…

Woman who are placed on the Basic regime as punishment for breaking prison rules are being allowed to keep their in-cell televisions, in a policy change aimed at preventing self-harm. This policy should be implemented across the estate regardless of gender.

🌎 It’s #EarthDay—and summer is around the corner and #Nevadaprisons aren’t prepared for extreme heat!🔥 Broken systems, failing infrastructure, and no relief! Underfunded prisons can’t afford basic protections. Decarceration is climate action!
