The great Paul Whitehouse is 68 years old today, which means I am obliged to post this (again!) - arguably the most majestically random but brilliant comedy sketch committed to celluloid for at least the last, what, forty, forty five years? Yes, forty, forty five years. Happy birthday Paul 🤘

My mother- Ann Harpur- @RADA_London in 1956, playing Viola in Twelfth Night — my dramaturg, my theatre history guide, my staunchest support, and my most honest critic. Always there. I am so grateful. Eighty-eight years of grace, wisdom, and love. Happy birthday, Mum. 🎂✨

Twenty-three years in, and she's still showing me what dedication looks like. Heidi's next novel comes out on our wedding anniversary. Incredibly proud of her. @Heidi_Reimer

Few players could conjure up a cross as Trent Alexander-Arnold did for Kylian Mbappe against Bayern in the Bernabeu. Few could see the perfect place to put the ball for Mbappe let alone execute the pass. Alexander-Arnold could. Vision and technique. Other countries would celebrate such a talent. He’s won the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool. He now starts for Real Madrid. Yet can’t make a 36-man England squad for a couple of friendlies. Neither of which England won. Alexander-Arnold did show why the watching Thomas Tuchel has concerns about him defensively. Few expect England’s head coach to pick him in his World Cup 26. Reece James, fitness permitting, and probably Tino Livramento are Tuchel’s right-back picks. But Alexander-Arnold showed the huge reward that goes with occasional risk. His dead-ball delivery and crossing are world class. Can Tuchel really leave such a game-changing talent behind? He probably will. And there will be crunch moments in the knockout stages, late on in tight games against far more testing opposition than England swanned past in qualifying, perhaps even in a penalty shootout, when England will regret not having Alexander-Arnold's right foot to kick-start their recovery. His club-mate, Jude Bellingham, showed at the Bernabeu why he has to start at 10 for England at the World Cup. Big-game player, came on and brought more menace to Real. His strong personality, technical and physical qualities are needed in pressure situations. Tuchel has exceptional options at 10, and Morgan Rogers is a Tuchel favourite, but Bellingham is world class. He has to start. #ENG #RMCF #RMABAY

One of my favourite theatres in the world. Five plays there… One of the best audiences too. Love the Potteries people!
Paul Williams@PaulWilliams207

The democratic design of theatre-in-the-round allied to the sense of inclusiveness, belonging and North Staffordshire’s notable friendliness is, according to @TheresaHeskins a key factor in why the @NewVicTheatre has ‘found its home here and suits this audience so much.’ The New Vic isn’t just a venue - it’s where inclusive, accessible theatrical excellence happens. In continuing to honour Peter Cheeseman’s legacy, the 40-year-old creative hothouse stands as a testament to the power of theatre to transform and enhance local communities and put the Potteries on the world theatre map.

Still can’t believe that England are going to the World Cup without arguably their best passer. Watching fringe candidates labour at Wembley highlights even more the nonsense of Alexander-Arnold’s omission. He’s a game-changing option from the bench. If you have pace out wide in Gordon/Rashford and Saka/Madueke/Bowen and want to launch a quick counter, TAA can deliver. If England are in a shoutout, he can deliver. Risk/reward. #ENG

My daughter graduates in June. OSAP cuts directly affect her & her classmates. Now Ontario wants to ban 'divisive issues' from the ceremony? Silencing students on the day they've earned their voice is wrong. #Ontario #OSAP #Graduation2026

Obviously, there is a story behind this, but if you saw Trent play recently, you would see how much he has improved...and he was already a top player. Baffling decision by Tuchel. #lhommesportif

Ben White's return to the England fold after his lengthy self-imposed exile borders on the insulting to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who continues to be overlooked by Thomas Tuchel at right-back. Reece James injured, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier retired internationally and now the withdrawal of Jarell Quansah (seen as right-back cover by Tuchel). And Alexander-Arnold still not called. Real Madrid's right-back in the Champions League. A player whose passing can change games. A tournament shootout penalty-taker. White drafted into squad because of injury to Quansah. Be interesting to see the reaction of England fans - let alone Alexander-Arnold. White has to explain why he turned his back on England for three and a half years. Expect some skilled FA video content. Gareth Southgate said in March 2024 that White had indicated to him that he didn't want to be considered for England. There's always been speculation about a fall-out between White and Southgate's assistant Steve Holland (Southgate denied this). Tuchel clearly doesn't rate Alexander-Arnold, a situation that gets ever stranger. White obviously a more defensive full-back; can get forward but lacks Alexander-Arnold's impact. He did well when coming on for Dani Carvajal against Atletico last night. Made Vinicius Junior's second goal. Harvey Barnes, who has one cap, comes in for the injured Eberechi Eze for the squad to face Uruguay on Friday and Japan on March 31. #ENG
