Where is Africa In a world that’s changing fast, with big powers clashing and middle powers coming together to claim their space, Africa seems lost at sea. Where are we? For too long, we’ve been on the menu of the big players – served up for their interests, our resources picked apart. It’s time we move to the table, speaking for ourselves, defending our land, our people, and our future. Think back to the 1960s and 1970s. We had giants who stood tall: Kwame Nkrumah with his dream of a united Africa, Sekou Touré fighting off old colonial tricks, Julius Nyerere nation-building and leading the liberation of southern Africa, Kenneth Kaunda with his heart for humanity, Ahmed Ben Bella and Gamal Abdul Nasser sparking revolutions. They weren’t perfect, but they put Africa first in a tough world. They took leadership and spoke for Africa. Then came the late 1990s and 2000s, a fresh wave of leaders picking up the fight: Thabo Mbeki linking Africa to the global stage, Benjamin Mkapa fixing economies quietly, Levy Mwanawasa standing against corruption, Ketumile Masire nurturing democracy, Meles Zenawi pushing hard for growth, Abdelaziz Bouteflika playing smart diplomacy, Abdoulaye Wade with bold ideas, and Olusegun Obasanjo commanding respect. Even Muammar Gaddafi had that pull, rallying us in ways others couldn’t. On the global stage then, if you saw Meles, you knew Africa was being represented. But now? There’s a big empty space. No one steps up like before to make sense of these global shakes and put Africa’s needs front and center. The old “rules-based” world is falling apart – wars, trade fights, climate messes. This is our chance! We can’t sit back. We must protect our sovereignty, keep our minerals and farms for our people, boost trade among ourselves through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and turn the African Union (AU) into a real common market right now – no slow steps, no waiting. Out of 54 African Presidents and Prime Ministers, no one is standing up for 1.5 billion people. No one is stepping up as a leader and forging alliances for the interests of the continent as Mbeki, Obasanjo, or Meles did. Africa needs that one leader to glue us together, to push a true African agenda. Who could it be? William Ruto with his drive? Hakainde Hichilema’s fresh start? Paul Kagame’s focus? Abiy Ahmed’s changes? We miss a conscious South Africa leading with conscience, a stable DRC using its immense natural wealth and geography, an Egypt that looks south to the continent, and a Nigeria that knows its giant power and uses it wisely. Africa just can’t afford to fade away.
