Very interesting to see both points of view on Gymkhana Club debate. Broadly, if it’s public lands, membership should not be for the entitled babus and plutocrats alone. Private clubs can do that.

@Preddy85 As a cockroach I can relate to Dipke. I feel bad that a cockroach like me is denied of the freedom of forming association by clipping our online wings. I can’t join @CJP_2026 And we didn’t name ourselves, the cockroach moniker is given to us by His Divinity the CJI himself.

The scale of the government clampdown on this satirical movement is reminiscent of the panic in the last days of the UPA rule when cartoonists were being arrested for cartoons mocking Parliament and the Constitution. Never good when politicans panic and let babus take control.
Abhijeet Dipke@abhijeet_dipke

The government has taken down our iconic website - cockroachjantaparty.org. 10 Lakh cockroaches had signed up on our website has members. 6 Lakh cockroaches had signed a petition to demand the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. Why is the government so scared of cockroaches? But this dictatorial behaviour is opening the eyes of India's youth. Our only crime is we were demanding a better future for ourselves. But you can't get rid of us that easily. We’re working on a new home right now. Cockroaches never die. 🪳

@big_pict @DivaJain2 China had its set of advantages and India had its own. India never really freed up its manufacturing or FDI. Its bureaucratic control is insane. Instead it focused on services. Ultimately China during Hu Jintao and India during Modi are fair comparisons in size and maturity.

@robert_frost100 @DivaJain2 China had first mover advantage & made it difficult for all developing countries. Take Vietnam. It liberalized in 1986. But 23 years later, from 2009 to 2019, its avg growth rate was only 6.2%. Vietnam never had 9%+ growth years in last 30 years despite not being a democracy.

After the first 12 years of Deng in China, in 1990, China per capita GDP was still less than India. Deng grew per capita GDP by ~6% CAGR in 12 years. Modi has grown per capita GDP by ~5.3% CAGR despite higher base, COVID and democracy. At least check data before criticizing, no?
Priestlyclass Strongman@priestlyclass

Lol even after 12 years, people are still living in such delusions. He is nowhere close to Lee Kuan Yew or Deng Xiaoping, he's more of an accelerationist like Mikhail Gorbachev. Even without democracy, he would still be doing the same bare minimum mediocre stuff.

GoI should give up rights to $2 bn property to preserve "repository of sporting, services & cultural memories" for 14,000 elite members. This is Socialism with benefits, Lutyens style :)

Apropos Union Gov’s decision to destroy #DelhiGymkhanaClub my views: 1. I joined it in 1978/79 (applied in 1974). My father wasn’t a member. 2. Only all-India services & military officers got membership routinely. 3. The club, besides its other services, was famous for its tennis & squash facilities. Famous writer/journalist Khushwant Singh played tennis there till his 90s 4. The elected committees may’ve performed poorly, making gov nominate members. 5. As my old friend @thekiranbedi has opined Del Gym Club is a repository of sporting, services & cultural memories. Destroying it is untenable.

The CJI needs a PR win after the 'cockroach' comments. So expect fireworks in court on Monday. Except, do remember that the accused in the case also deserve a fair trial, not prejudiced by adverse commentary from the CJI prior to trial.

Supreme Court takes suo motu cognisance of the Twisha Sharma death case. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is likely to consider the matter on Monday. Supreme Court registers suo motu case 'In Re Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepencies in the Unnatural Death of Young Woman at Matrimonial Home'.

I will tell you how we got here. This app turned American public discourse into a video game, where whoever could get the biggest insult-mob on their side "won". Then people started realizing that a massive multiplayer insult-based video-game actually has negative consequences.
Beff (e/acc)@beffjezos

The amount of ressentiment there is right now is insane. Feeling it as the eye of the storm and the boundary of the polarization on both sides for a day. How did we get here?

@Shuk_law_ There have been too many controversies. So perhaps it’s thought to do some good work in a criminal case that is grabbing headlines. Last time the court’s intervention in RG Kar case ended up terribly with further erosion of popular trust.

@avatans Bureaucrats of 1947 to 1970s were a completely different from today’s bureaucrats. Almost everyone was honest and helpful. and even approachable. Yes, their salaries were low, their children grew up and settled down in India. It’s different for post 1980s bureaucrats

Remarkable response by this retired bureaucrat KC, a former India ambassador, justifying the “Gymkhana Club” privileges. It gives you a glimpse of the mentality of Indian Babudom. “… bureaucrats since 1947 worked for salaries well below private sector doles.” No one forced these Babus to work for the GOI. Why didn’t they work in the private sector? Interesting choice of word “doles” here. “Doles” are a feature of state, not private sector. Is he for real?

If I am not wrong, the Government is without a Finance Secretary for around a year. Usually, one of the 5 secretaries who head various departments is designated FS. The role, first among equals, has an important role in coordination and being a single focal point. At a time of economic stress, is this a miss?

@sanjayuvacha Sir, confirmation bias is always there in every field. In Twitter it’s extremely high. But when you respond to one, there are many others who are otherwise silent, getting benefited from your response. The difference between ‘number of views’ and ‘reply’ has a hidden story

I have had this misconception before. I used to think that it was important to get out a message to even a hostile audience of a hostile platform. I no longer see it that way. On these channels people do not want to listen to what you say, they want to hear whatever confirms their predispositions and biases. There are no moderators interested in getting their audiences to hear both sides. They only want controversies and shouting to get them TRPs. If you have a message to communicate, it is better to do it solo or in writing.

This is a segment from my recently concluded interview with India Today in Delhi, where I went with the thought of discussing my book in depth, but was ambushed by pseudoscience apologists and sympathizers all around. I was pleasantly shocked to see my supposed "angry, rude" posts shown on National TV for a debate, while the other posts, where Ayush practitioners who dehumanized me using racial and religious slurs such as "ricebag" , "anti-Hindu" , "son of organ thief" , "priest-abused Christian Missionary" etc.. were conveniently ignored. Even though confrontational, riddled with ad-hominem, and hugely fallacious to a good extent, I did feel that these kind of conversations will ultimately help some realize the value of critical thinking in health and medicine.

@clashreport @Noahpinion Francis Fukuyama had written in his book the problem of US is over institutionalisation. Trump has now solved that problem for good. We can now know what’s the most serious problem hidden under cover of over institutionalisation.

Francis Fukuyama on the U.S. as a declining power: American decline is a direct product of Trump's rise since 2016. It is as if Trump had decided to do everything in his power to weaken the United States vis-à-vis China. He has polarized an already polarized country, cut funding for basic scientific research, and attacked American universities which are the best in the world. He and his colleagues have openly stated that their domestic opponents — the Democrats — are a far greater threat to the future of the United States than either China or Russia. There is agreement among America's friends and rivals that the United States has become something of a rogue state that is contributing to global instability and disorder — as well as something of a laughingstock.

Centre has issued an order for re-entry and resumption of the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club land at Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, citing public purpose, defence infrastructure and national security considerations. The government has asked the Club to hand over possession of the property by June 5, 2026.

#BREAKING: Supreme Court recalls its earlier observations against the authors of the controversial Class 8 NCERT judiciary chapter and withdraws directions asking governments, universities and educational institutions to disassociate from them academically CJI Surya Kant-led Bench says the authors’ explanation showed there was no deliberate or knowing misrepresentation of facts. Court clarifies its earlier remarks in Para 8 of the March 11, 2026 order stand recalled. The Court, however, reiterated that the textbook content on the judiciary was “wholly undesirable” and “unnecessary”, while noting that the Union government has already constituted an expert committee headed by a former SC judge to revise the material.
