@rue_du_four Indian people have crab mentality. Cribbing about the previlage of dozen people in Delhi when fate of rupee is at stake. People are themselves driven by jealously, fear and fake righteousness that seeks monkey balancing over well being.

Much of the hate and support against the Delhi Gymkhana comes from the resentment towards the fact that the rich still have access to quiet, clean, well-managed spaces insulated from the everyday collapse of public infrastructure in Indian cities. Private clubs became symbols of privilege because the city governments across India failed to build public institutions with the same standards of safety, maintenance, culture, courteous mannerisms and dignity. When public parks and green spaces disappeared, everything gets concretised, there is zero respect for public behaviour and etiquettes in shared spaces and civic spaces become dysfunctional, exclusivity itself becomes aspirational. The real issue is not that private clubs exist. The issue is that India has failed to create equally aspirational public spaces for everyone else. Destroying exclusivity will not create excellence; but building better public institutions might...

@priestlyclass Modi like any good magician pulled a sleight of hand in plain sight. He created smoke and mirrors to hide the corrupt system from people who are not well acquainted with the system. Digital india created a sense of accountability while the system remained as corrupt etc.

Post Mao china was economically wrecked, Deng started from scratch. In contrast mudi inherited a stronger services/IT sector & a growing middle class. In Deng's first 12 yrs, he launched radical reforms that actively kickstarted manufacturing like household responsibility system, SEZs, TVEs & FDI openness. here we see no equivalent structural breakout, manufacturing's share of GDP remains stagnant at 13-15% far below the 25% target. All we've mostly got is importmaxxing & applying 'Made in India' stickers on them by dhandhos & protectionism. Important reforms have either been rolled back, diluted or lost impact due to poor execution
Diva Jain@DivaJain2

After the first 12 years of Deng in China, in 1990, China per capita GDP was still less than India. Deng grew per capita GDP by ~6% CAGR in 12 years. Modi has grown per capita GDP by ~5.3% CAGR despite higher base, COVID and democracy. At least check data before criticizing, no?

@manoj_216 India is sitting on a gold mine of an opportunity to build a civilization at the scale that this world and this part of globe has never seen before and will never see hence. Most ingredients are in alignment except for leadership and vision.

Yes, we have a favorable youth demography. And this happens once in many centuries for a nation. China grabbed that opportunity and grew at 10-13% for many decades. With demography not in its favor, it is down to 4-5% growth and may continue at the same pace for many decades. The same high growth opportunity has been knocking our doors for some time now. But if do not uplift our youth in the value chain, we will just squander this lifetime chance. Top class Education, Scientific Research, world class manufacturing - without that, we will continue to have just moderate growth of 5-6%. We might feel happy that this growth is still better than most major economies but remember that this is our growth at peak demography. By no means, I am demeaning either bag carrying work, or delivery work of 10 min delivery apps. Everything is important and respectable for a family to earn a living, but these kinds of services are not innovation and high value work. These should not become the backbone of our nation. These should not divert our focus. The time is ticking. Our population demography is likely to peak between 2030-35 (when we will have around 68% working youth population, after which it will start declining). That is just roughly one more decade. This is probably our last chance to take a big shot.

In Lajpat, you can now pay ₹149/hr for someone to carry your bags, wait in food queues, walk you to the metro, find you a place to sit, and even set up a foldable chair. interesting biz !!

Lalu Prasad Yadav tried to take over the Patna Golf Club. He has long gone from power but the club continues. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Populist leaders overthrowing elite bastions, is a game as old as humankind itself.

Centre has issued an order for re-entry and resumption of the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club land at Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, citing public purpose, defence infrastructure and national security considerations. The government has asked the Club to hand over possession of the property by June 5, 2026.

@frontierindica In korea and japan, export performance was used as a test to judge which one is a better oligarch to bet on. Since domestic market can be rigged by local syndicate, performance in external market served as neutral test of future entrepreneurial ability. In India its reverse.

This is why you cannot compare Korean chaebols with Indian dhandho-lala monopolists. Samsung chip workers help create one of the most valuable industrial machines on earth, and the company ends up sharing a serious part of the upside with them. In Vishwaguru, the same promoter class would spend billions on a wedding circus with imported celebrities and atrocious Bollywood performances before giving its wage slaves one extra meaningful bonus.

@frontierindica Indian crony capitalists and oligarchs like Amabani-Adani can't be compared with Korean chaebols like Samsung or Japanese keiretsu like Mitsubishi. The fundamental reason is government incentive. In Japan and Korea, oligarchs are only allowed to grow if their export is great.

@surjitbhalla Convergence hypothesis as endorsed in many macro models is empirically false. Even UK is finding it tough to catch up with US income level. There will 4-5 equilibria of national incomes. US type, UK type, China type & Thailand type. We are headed towards Thailand type.

@surjitbhalla Modi's core agenda had always been to capture productive segments of Indian economy via its cronies. For this political power was the neccessary input. But his fatal flaw was supplanting economic statecraft with "oligarchy management".

@surjitbhalla Modi believed that he can ignore structural issues of India, & can grow the economy by doing more of the same. The diminishing return set in quickly. The second airport & metros did not have the crowd that the first had. Our competitors raced ahead & structural issues deepend.
