I’m in engineering. My laptop has $2k of licensed software for my senior project. It doesn’t leave my desk. My dormmate kept asking to “just use it for Netflix” because his was slow. I said no. Every time. “Too much important stuff on here. Use the library computers.” He waited until I was in the shower, grabbed it, and spilled Dr Pepper on the keyboard. Fried the motherboard. Repair: $900. Data recovery: $300. His response: “It’s just a laptop bro. My parents bought yours anyway.” They didn’t. I worked 2 jobs for it. RA said: “You guys should just work it out. Don’t make it a whole thing.” I didn’t. I filed a campus police report for destruction of property and took him to small claims. Won $1,200. He had to drop a class to pick up more shifts to pay me. Now the whole floor says I “got him kicked out of school” because he failed that class. No. He got himself kicked out of my trust when he picked up my laptop.

Silencio. —¿Aprendiendo qué? —A querer al hijo que tengo y no al que imaginé. No lo planeé. Se me salió. Él no dijo nada por un momento. —Eso es lo más honesto que me has dicho en la vida —me dijo al fin. Hoy mi hijo tiene 23. Tiene novio. Lo he conocido. Es buen muchacho. No llegué perfecto a esto. Llegué honesto. Y a veces eso es suficiente. Porque amar a alguien no es aceptar solo lo que esperabas de ellos. Es aprender a querer lo que son aunque no coincida con lo que soñaste. Y ese aprendizaje no siempre es rápido. Pero vale la pena cada paso que da.

A woman on my flight yesterday switched seats with her husband because their toddler wouldn’t stop crying. The second she sat down alone, she closed her eyes for maybe 30 seconds. Just resting. Not sleeping. When the husband walked past with the kid later, he laughed and said loudly, “Must be nice to finally get a break from doing nothing.” A few people chuckled. She laughed too. But something about it felt off because for the entire flight she had been: holding the baby, packing snacks, cleaning spills, walking him down the aisle, missing her own meal trying to calm him down… while the husband watched a movie with headphones on. And honestly I think that’s why so many women are exhausted. Not because they’re doing everything alone. But because they’re doing everything while someone else calls it “nothing.”
