@griswold Beating their previous score, being top of their grade level, rewards if they meet their goal, it depends. The main issue is those bottom 30-40% that don’t seem to care, and it starts at home. If families don’t care… what would students?

@griswold From my experience, at least in Texas. After STAAR they are done. They know neither STAAR nor MAP scores affect them or their future. So unless er try to incentivize/force them to show their work they don’t care, just click click click.

@ThatArrowsmith Rich/poor is not just a number. Ask any american how often they take 3 weeks off to travel. Now try a European, or if they ever hesitated visiting a doctor or dentist because of the bill. That’s the freedom they are talking about.

Most Europeans don't appreciate how poor they are compared to the US. They only know America through TV. If they've visited they stuck to tourist hotspots, city centres and national parks — they've never driven through surburbia, been inside an ordinary American home, or witnessed the enormous wealth that average middle-class American families enjoy compared to the Europoors. But hey, at least Europe has its sneering sense of moral superiority.

I tutor my own kids a lot so I can learn to build Synthesis tutor. The two biggest mistakes I make: 1. Throw too much at them at once. Almost always because I don’t realize how much knowledge is embedded in the concept I’m trying to teach. I think I’m teaching one thing, but it’s more like five. 2. Fail to let the student hold the pen. It’s remarkable but they seem utterly unable to learn if I am holding the pen. I think because giving them the pen puts them in control. Humans like to learn by doing, not observing or being talked at.
