💤 Antarctic sleep goals! Watch a beautiful Weddell seal enjoying a peaceful nap on the shore of Galindez Island, home to Vernadsky station. We can only envy such deep and sweet sleep — especially after some recent nights 🚀 in Ukraine. What do you think this sleepy beauty is dreaming about? Endless supplies of fish, perhaps? 🐟😊 Fun fact: seals can sleep both on land (or ice) and in the water 🌊 Weddell seals often rest on coastal ice, while some species prefer floating ice floes or beaches. Underwater, seals may sleep horizontally or even “hang” vertically, slowly spiraling downward before returning to the surface to breathe and continuing the cycle. 💤 They usually get only about 2 hours of sleep in the water, but on land or ice they can snooze for around 10 hours — sometimes up to 14! Some species are even capable of unihemispheric sleep: one half of the brain rests while the other stays alert 👀, helping them watch for predators and remain aware of their surroundings. Stevie was in rehab for five months and released at over 30 kg last November! While the stay at a temporary facility like Aroha is short, without it, the most vulnerable pups would not survive. Before Aroha existed, pups deemed to unwell to make the journey were euthanized 😢

This is Stevie ❤️ Stevie is something like a ‘model patient’ of Aroha Seal Sanctuary to show what they do. She’s a prematurely born harbor seal pup from last season and weighed less than 5.9 kg when she was found abandoned on the isle of Uist.
