American public is sold on replacing income tax with tariff Yet income tax is mostly paid by the very rich (either directly or their investments and corporations) Tariff goes into consumer spending. On which the not wealthy spend bigger % of income on Great move for US elites

1/ A repatriated Korean worker from the Hyundai-LG battery factory secretly wrote a detention diary about their 7-day experience in ICE custody in Georgia. The worker says ICE officers mocked them with words like as "North Korea" and "Rocket Man" despite holding a business visa.

BREAKING: The 300+ Korean workers who were detained in last week's ICE raid at the Hyundai-LG battery plant construction site in Georgia have arrived in South Korea, walking out here in the arrivals hall at Incheon International Airport.

"It's 'cheating' of course in that private organizations can vet who's there, performance manage, select for intelligence, temperament, and all the rest of it. But it's this weird A/B test between how the world could be if managed aggressively and well, and the default state"
Antonio García Martínez (agm.eth)@antoniogm

One of the things that happens when you work inside a really high-functioning private enterprise (Facebook back in the day, and Coinbase now) is that you go out into the world and everything seems so inefficient and badly-designed by comparison. There's this steep dropoff with how things get done in such an organization and the rest of the world, and you feel it every time you have to navigate that larger world. Inside: everyone is hyper-intelligent, motivated, mission-oriented and civil. Outside, well, it's something else. It's 'cheating' of course in that private organizations can vet who's there, performance manage, select for intelligence, temperament, and all the rest of it. But it's this weird A/B test between how the world could be if managed aggressively and well, and the default state (which usually though not always is semi-chaotic and deeply flawed in innumerable ways). I think it's partly why these companies always end up a bit insular and tribal: you'd rather deal with your near-perfect bubble than the ugly outside. Few people who work in such orgs would likely be willing to say this publicly (and I'm probably foolish for doing so), but I don't think it's a unique observation.

@antoniogm Just went through LAX and I can see at least 50 people in uniform and some beautiful K9 doing security check. How many actual threats identified vs the value of just giving jobs to Americans?

One of my conspiracy theories is that much of the American economy is fake. Millions employed in entire workfare industries like TSA/DMV/USPS/HR, plunging labor participation rate and sky-high welfare/SSDI/SNAP rate, 20% of GDP in insanely marked up healthcare, asset bubbles in cities driven by NIMBY and FOMO, all this propped up by an overvalued dollar which the government can’t stop printing—conveniently the global reserve currency because our economic rival is a hermetic dictatorship. The only real-ish parts are a small (people-wise) tech sector that launders that bloated paper wealth into a fantastically dynamic entrepreneurial talent sorting machine (with much of the talent having to be imported), and a ruthlessly efficient services industry that keeps cost of living down for the well-off (with much of the labor having to be imported).

There's an epidemic of astroturfing in AI right now I get offered money regularly now to post positively about AI apps and I know people on here who take that money There's tens of millions of dollars spent on this because they know having someone big tweet positive about your app has a higher return than buying ads these days But don't you have to disclose if you got paid for a tweet? Yes, so the smart new workaround is giving influencers stock in your company. Most startups are private (pre-IPO) and you don't need to disclose you own their stock when you tweet about them I think this stuff disturbs the free debate on here though, you don't know if people actually like a product or not I will keep tweeting what I really think about things and won't take payment to tweet ever thxxx

It tastes like butter because it is butter. People are freaking out over the Bill Gates thing, but what they don't realize is that it's probably the cleanest, purest butter there is. Listen to the process - they take carbon dioxide from the air, hydrogen from the water, heat it up, oxidize them and use lethicin as an emulsifier, (lethicin is a mixture of fats that are essential to cells in the humans by the way), then add natural color and flavors. No chemicals, no preservatives, no hormones, no steroids, no over-processing - air, water and fire. Extracted from the natural elements. That's probably the healthiest butter ever created too. I wanna try some. For real. I wanna try some.

I've met more than a few programmers like this. Usually highly competent, but aggrieved that their impact on the world hasn't measured up to their ego. And the safe space is to consider most everyone else an idiot. Sad!

everyone needs to stop stressing about the size of engagement rings. too small, lab grown, wrong cut. who cares. the best ring is pried off his mother’s cold, dead hands. rob a grave if you must. love only counts if it’s an heirloom soaked in generations of chaos.
