This CGT fiasco could be a nightmare for servicemen and women.
Those that buy a family home often need to leave it because they are posted to another city. Home is now rented out. Then posted back a few years later. Etc etc

It's quite possible that these aircraft, like the one that was stranded in India on Op HIGHMAST, were disabled by anti-tamper software that activated when they landed at a place that was not on the support network or their mission plan.

Two RAF F-35B jets have been stranded at Lajes Airport in the Azores for two months after mechanical faults on their maiden flight from Lockheed Martin's factory in Texas. The £88m jets remain Lockheed Martin's property until repaired. It's the latest in a string of F-35 reliability problems for the RAF. Another jet was stuck in India for a month last year, one crashed into the Mediterranean in 2021, and a 2025 audit found the fleet could only perform a third of required missions. Noticed in discussions a growing trend in Army circles to consider civilian vehicles for war fighting, which at first glance feels like flexibility and innovative concealment, but given the incidence of blue on blue incidents on recent Ops with good vehicle ID, I’m not convinced.

After two years back at Regimental Duty many of the old complaints about the Defence Estate commentators still like to repeat seem to be aging stereotypes rather than widespread experience. Outside of periodic breaks you’d expect in any house, the old complaints are drying up.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say this is an essential expense. A bit annoying that it got to here, and i get the criticism about priorities, but service personnel need to feel valued, else they will vote with their feet.
