NASA has uncovered a tiny cosmic sculptor: an 8-kilometer (5-mile) wide “shepherd moon” named Daphnis, quietly orbiting within Saturn’s narrow Keeler Gap.Like a miniature gravitational maestro, Daphnis uses its gentle pull to constantly herd and reshape the surrounding sea of ice and dust. The result? Dramatic, towering ripples and waves that ripple along both edges of the gap—some soaring up to a mile high despite Saturn’s razor-thin rings being only tens of meters thick in places.In 2009, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft captured these breathtaking disturbances for the first time. During Saturn’s equinox, when sunlight grazed the rings edge-on, Cassini revealed the majestic shadows cast by these mile-high waves—stunning proof of the delicate, dynamic dance happening in one of the most beautiful places in our Solar System.
