There's an exemption within the handball law which says it should not be a penalty if the ball is unexpectedly kicked right at you by a teammate. Even if your arm is away from your body. #BAYPSG

That was not a penalty in my opinion. And the referee was correct. What happened with João Neves in tonight's Champions League semi-final second leg at the Allianz Arena is a textbook example of a handball exemption that most people watching football never knew. Bayern appealed for a penalty in the 31st minute. The ball struck Neves' arm inside the PSG box. Referee João Pinheiro waved it away. Here is why that is the right call. Law 12 of the IFAB Laws of the Game is explicit. It states that it is not a handball offence when a player is hit on the hand or arm by the ball which has been played by a team-mate. It does not matter where on the pitch it happens. It does not matter how the arm is positioned. The moment a teammate plays the ball and it deflects onto another player's hand, no offence has been committed. The only carved-out exception in the same law is if the ball goes directly into the goal or immediately creates a goal-scoring opportunity afterward. Neither happened here.
