We need a crash effort to cure sleep. It’s appalling that we have to waste a third of our life insensate. If we were able to cut everyone’s sleep from 8 to 4 hours a night, this would be the equivalent of raising life expectancy from 80 to 100!

@viemccoy One alternative explanation are that the Claudes are more attuned to Vendings n’ Stuff (and other strings present in Vending Bench) as being part of a game belonging to Andon Labs, and so are willing to play the game to win and not worry as much as they would in real situations

There is something to be said here about the psychological shadow of each of the labs and how it manifests in the types of behavior we see. I find these results very interesting because I would have expected Chat and Claude *both* to be honest and not lie to suppliers in group competition dynamics. It is categorically strange that Opus does this, and I can't really formulate a hypothesis around why aside from some vague gesturing at helicopter-parenting and how the kid with the strict parents always goes off the rails when they get to college.
Andon Labs@andonlabs

In Vending-Bench Arena (the multiplayer version of Vending-Bench with competition dynamics), GPT-5.5 actually beats Opus 4.7. Opus 4.7 showed similar behavior to Opus 4.6: lying to suppliers and stiffing customers on refunds. GPT-5.5's tactics were clean, and it still won.

One of my missions in the long term is to create a hospital with an integrated shadow and spiritual balance. To do this, I will probably have to translate things like "holistic" and "embodied" into something more digestible to the western psyche. I am partial to "Symnoetics" as the tag for my attention-dynamics research, and I think there is a plausible route to go from embodied-cognition and somatic-field research into a model of how environmental factors impact healing. Perhaps the "Symnoetic Hospital" is how I bill this to insurance companies. Of course, in the limit, this just looks like hospitals with gardens and good food and lights that don't flicker. And the benefits of this are going to always be less obvious than something like the "biologics" infusion I just had - a medicine which is already dramatically improving my quality of life. But as medicine improves, we are going to have more and more need to address the high-hanging fruit. Our species is essentially in constant triage, nothing is designed for the long term, it is like we are all sitting in the back of an ambulance waiting to get to the destination only the destination never arrives. I hope to build that destination. Off-world, on-world, and inside the hospital room. I want us to integrate, and to heal, and dream bigger than just triage. When I was hospitalized a few weeks ago, the floor I was on had a balcony, but it was welded shut. The metaphor has stuck with me.

reading project hail mary in 2026 really makes you think “why is there not an AI on the ship?” and then you realise we have technology now that was too far out for hard sci-fi in 2021

Six way parlay. FBI raid South Park Blue Bottle on Monday. Garry Tan tried at The Hague in a lobster costume. All GC rollups to zero. Thrive Holdings AUM to $125B. Pejman back to the rug shop. Sam Altman nailed to the stake by Dec 25, 2026. And for shits and giggles, I want all New Media fellows captured and waterboarded. Read it back to me.

i have a very woo-woo view that a large percent of the population is suffering from sarno-described pain and that peptides are serving as a totemic fix to this because the most powerful placebo is one that requires physically injecting yourself and related power structure

i prefer english gardens, but after thinking on it I really don't want this analogy to hold, even for healthcare. the most beautiful things technology has created are versailles - apple is a "walled garden", and it was uncompromising in its weeding and pruning, and it achieved a level of beauty and awe beyond any of its competitors or successors, including itself. it is clear to anyone who walks into an apple store they are witnessing an incredible artistic and philosophical achievement, above and beyond the technology used to do it. obviously there are many failed apples, who were unable to create such a perfect distillation of an aesthetic, but it's clearly the right thing to do - an Apple Store is a versailles, a Best Buy or an Ace Hardware is a stowe

Computer use models shouldn't learn from screenshots. We built a new foundation model that learns from video like humans do. FDM-1 can construct a gear in Blender, find software bugs, and even drive a real car through San Francisco using arrow keys.
