The family in Room 7 never came outside during the day. At first, nobody found that strange. In Lagos, people mind their business professionally. Especially in cheap compounds where everybody is struggling already. You learn very quickly not to ask questions you can’t afford answers to. So when the family moved in quietly one rainy Tuesday and kept their curtains permanently closed, most people just accepted it. They paid rent on time. Never fought with neighbors. Never played loud music. Never borrowed fuel during blackout. Perfect tenants. Too perfect.

I noticed something on my second day in the village. There were no old people. At first, I didn’t think much about it. It was a small village. Maybe the elderly stayed indoors. Maybe they had traveled. But by evening, it started bothering me. Children everywhere. Teenagers. Young men drinking outside. Women cooking. Nobody looked older than sixty. Nobody. No bent grandmothers. No old men under trees arguing about politics. Nothing. It felt wrong immediately. Because this was a village. Villages always had old people watching you. Always. I asked my cousin casually. “Where are the elderly people here?” He paused too long before answering. “Most of them died.” “All of them?” He shrugged. Didn’t look at me again. That night. The whole village went dark suddenly.

Any struggling freelancer in Nigeria knows the golden rule of the hustle: the 12 AM to 4 AM night data plan is your best friend. It is cheap, the network is finally fast, and the whole world is asleep, leaving you to focus on your work. But is the whole word really asleep? I was sitting alone on the mattress in my small self-contain apartment, fighting heavy sleep, in the dead silence of the night with the bright glow of my laptop screen in the pitch-black room. Around 2:45 AM, my Glo network started acting up. The page I was trying to load just kept spinning and spinning. Frustrated, I hissed and clicked on my laptop's Wi-Fi icon to see if my phone's hotspot had disconnected. My phone was still connected. But right under it, an open, free Wi-Fi network appeared. The name of the network was: Look Behind You.

I let out a heavy breath I didn't know I was holding. It was a hacker. Somebody had just hacked my system and was messing with me. "God punish you," I whispered to the screen, reaching my hand forward to aggressively press down the power button and forcefully shut the laptop down. But as my finger hovered over the button, my eyes caught the Wi-Fi list on the screen refreshing one last time. The hacker's network disappeared. In its place, four new Wi-Fi networks popped up at the exact same time. They were arranged perfectly from top to bottom: Network 1: I Am Not Behind You. Network 2: The Camera Cannot See The Floor. Network 3: Don't Move Your Legs. Network 4: I Am Reaching For Your Ankle Now. Before my brain could process the whole thing, a freezing, impossibly long hand clamped tightly around my bare ankle and violently yanked me under the bed.
