@jtlinder I love this stuff! I coached without a track and with one. I'll tell you this...it's not even a fair competition if you don't have one. The small schools that do have one are extremely lucky!

My school was the only school in our conference that had a regulation track in the 1980s.
It was crushed lime and it was 6 lanes, but it was ours and we were proud of it.
On meet days, our AD and track coaches (and, thus, coaches' kids) got up at 5 a.m. to chalk the track.

Headed to State Track....and they don't even have a track. That's reality for some small schools. Despite that, Paton Churdan in Greene County has both Trevon Keely & Blaise Schilling competing this week on the big stage. Check out track...err...grass practice. Good luck, men!

It is State Meet Eve and I am as anxious today as I was when I attended my first one in 1975. @IGHSAU @IHSAA do an amazing job of getting all of parts in the right place & Iowa kids do the rest! Great athletes, coaches, officials and 10,000+ fans daily. Let’s GO!

This is ridiculous.
And track and field gives their officials too much power.
Imagine if an NFL or NBA ref could negate all points scored in the last 10 minutes of play off a single infraction. That's essentially what we do in track.
There are no minor penalties. It's dumb.

Mallard Creek boys track and field was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct after winning the 4x400 relay in the final event of the day. Had the result stayed, the Mavericks would have won the team state championship. Instead, they remained in second place. I get daily reports of coaches who don't FTC.
When asked, one of the coaches who does the typical long runs for sprinters why she thinks some of our senior girls' times have regressed (haven’t PR'd since sophomore year). She replied, “Girls peak earlier than guys." 😵💫

@pntrack Won my first state championship as a head coach with a 3rd place finish in the 4x400, came down to the last race of the meet. They went into the meet seeded 23rd, barely made the 24 team field. Love the 4x4!
