For example, it's very important to metatext of The Boys that there's an enormous contingent of "Homelander fans" who "misunderstand the show", with the show "satirically" incorporating this alleged misunderstanding into its plot- but this is itself a motivated misreading/ simplification of positive fan response to Antony Starr's performance (which response is actually testament to his acting talent and charisma)- which has the weird consequence that the show had to walk this tightrope of utilizing Starr's talents whilst metatextually undermining them- and this obviously culminates in the sadistic spectacle of his death scene, which is intended to make definitive the "moral" that you were actually wrong to be entertained by his performance

"Media literacy" is just this grotesque edifice of self-flattering pretences supported by further self-flattering pretences- ironically the most glaring symptom of an absolutely catastrophic collapse of cultural sophistication- I think The Boys has gone further than any other contemporary work in organising itself entirely around this kind of metatext, in which the show itself is a kind of vestigial collection of images and the real "action" is in the drama of fandom itself

I’ve never once seen a single episode and yet the moment I heard of the show years ago, I knew it was garbage. I could simply tell by the smug hateful expressions on the plastic actors faces, the gray shitty factory warehouse lighting. The popcorn munching obsession with gore and violence. The simple premise of subverting the superhero, an already pathetic excuse for a mythological archetype that the West gets to have as a consolation prize. Within an instant, I saw the future of the show spelled out like a 20x fast forward chipmunk tape recorder squealing. I could smell the chimichangas on the breath of an obese LA hack in a dingy brightly lit writers room. I knew it would be several years of horrible shit, only made apparent to the dimmest audience members in the last season after they finally get beat over the head with blatant Trump bad man metaphors and transparent black lesbian retribution torture porn.
