according to bluesky, the problem with my jokes is that i don’t “use appropriate emojis to make it clear that it is a joke, since the line between reality and satire has become quite blurred nowadays”

@jhendersonYT When people write, “DNF, this book was not for me,” with no explanation. Why bother to post anything, then?

One thing not mentioned in this piece (which is fine) is that BookTok/Goodreads/YouTube/etc have shifted the meaning of ‘review.’ What people post online is almost entirely REACTIONS, not reviews. Thus, ‘I loved it. It made me cry. 4 stars.’
The Point Magazine@the_point_mag

“Yes, the Brontës’ implied reader was educated, English and at least bourgeois, but the BookToker’s implied reader is exclusionary, too,” writes @writingenjoyer.“The reader whose affective register is foreign to the book’s finds nothing in it.” thepointmag.com/criticism/comm…

@KaylaSaysMore My mom commented on how fat I was one Sunday morning while I was getting dressed for church—I was about 10?—and when I said she was fat too she got raging mad, like being fat was by far the worst thing you could be

@yossarial @rhaplord Have you read chapter 9: reversing development? The entire chapter is talking about how countries who seemed to have an inclusive future got their hopes destroyed by colonists.

@constans Of course it's an "adaptation"! It's dramatizing parts of the story with English-speaking actors in front of movie cameras. Filmmakers take huge liberties with source material all the time.

Because The Odyssey is inextricably linked to Greece. It immediately takes you out of the story It’s not an adaptation of The Odyssey— no one cares that Lee Weaver was cast in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?— it is the Odyssey and the Queen of Sparta being Lupita Nyong'o incongruous
Kristi Yamaguccimane@TheWapplehouse

The Odyssey is a fairy tale. I’ve never understood the backlash to casting whoever you want in a fairy tale. Make the Little Mermaid black. Make Jack and the Beanstalk trans. Make Paul Bunyan a Mexican dude. Who fucking gives a shit.

@xirsigdsn @FungibleWorker I'd say to read clusters of books/articles on a certain topic and think/write about how to they relate to each other—core assumptions, use of sources, key arguments, etc.

Now that I’m three days out from being done with grad school (fr fr this time, no more extensions), my only real advice is: whenever you read anything, immediately write a 500 word summary of its argument with points about what you thought was useful.

the negative reaction to Eilish’s veganism had me thinking about the “take shorter showers” environmentalism of my youth which, even though it had flaws, was way better than what we have now because it treated you as part of the system rather than endlessly buck-passing

Complaining about the left is what leftists do, but could you people quit proving that both sides of most debates on the left are full of people who don't understand statistics, keep mistaking what annoys them for actual causes of social problems, and can't make a post without positing a false binary that obscures understanding.

@alan2102z @khalilacp @Kali_de_Armas Yeah, eating vegan at home can be very cheap as long as you cook. But finding prepared vegan meals out in the world is harder and tends to be more expensive, and that's an important part of the equation for a lot of people

@khalilacp @Kali_de_Armas Pardon, but eating whole food plant-based is easily the least expensive way to go. Grain, peas, beans, seeds, potatoes, some veggies (onion, cabbage). Granted that many veggies and fruits are quite expensive, but then they are not necessary.

The "white chauvinist vegan" is a figure similar to the "sexist male Black revolutionary" and the "homophobic Islamic resistance fighter." Sure, these individuals exist, but their prevalence is greatly exaggerated by bad actors as a way to turn Leftists against radical movements.
Jonas Čeika@Jonas_Ceika

It's interesting how there's a stereotype on social media about veganism being mainly a white thing, when Black Americans are 3 times more likely to be vegan than the general population. And globally, the 4 most vegetarian countries are India, Mexico, Brazil, and Taiwan.

“I don’t like your argument so I’ll dismiss it” isn’t an actual counter. Not having a few metroplexes dictate all policy is a viable reason to support the electoral college and believe it leads to less damaging outcomes. We don’t have to accept your “muh democracy” premise.
James Surowiecki@JamesSurowiecki

@russkiejedi @JamesSurowiecki @bonchieredstate But don't you think voting would increase in certain places if people thought their vote actually mattered? As it is, candidates spend most of their campaign time in swing states pandering to their concerns

@kiapita1776 @JamesSurowiecki @frans070707 The votes from NY and CA are not nearly enough to win, for starters, and there are millions of conservative voters in both states. Why should people in NY & CA accept being permanently underrepresented in both Congress and in Presidential elections?

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.
