The collapse of an entire society and mass death. The collapse of international law (or of the pretence that it matters). The collapse of the accountability of global corporations that enable and profit from a plausible genocide. The collapse of active compassion within the West due to a fear of being shamed as racist - oh the irony. Yet some white middle class people in the West don't quite see the connection between a militarily-induced collapse of a society of Muslims and their own concern for a slower, kinder and more just collapse. It can be helpful to explain it in even more stark terms than Matthew's article: A society collapsing in the Middle East is as real as the one you live in. It might not feel that way because of the numbness that has been cultivated within us. Do you think only brown people in far away lands will be targeted using AI from US corps, with no protection from international law? What is happening in Palestine might be a wider future unfolding in front of our eyes. As @matlats explains, only of we normalise discussion of atrocities within our social circles can conversation move to ideas for how to reduce harm. That's why there has been the effort to keep us atomised in our exasperation.
