48 illegal foreign nationals were intercepted at the Polokwane Traffic Control Centre after two minibuses travelling from Zimbabwe to Gauteng were stopped on the N1 bypass. Authorities found that only two of the 50 passengers had valid passports, while the remaining 48 were allegedly in the country illegally. They will be escorted to the Beitbridge Border for deportation. Both minibuses were impounded for allegedly breaching operating licence conditions. The Department of Transport and Community Safety says it will continue working with law enforcement agencies to protect commuters, enforce immigration laws and uphold road safety regulations.

Lawyers for Alleged Killer of Witness D Push Court to Grant Bail, Claiming Katiso Molefe Was Also Released Despite Facing Serious Murder Charges Lawyers representing Matipandile Sotheni, the man accused of killing Marius van der Merwe (“Witness D”), have argued in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court that he should be granted bail, relying on a precedent set in the Katiso Molefe case. The bail application was heard on 22 May 2026 while Sotheni remains in custody. Sotheni, a former SAPS Special Task Force member, is accused in a high-profile murder linked to the killing of Witness D outside his Brakpan home on 5 December 2025. The victim had previously testified at the Madlanga Commission, and his wife and two children survived the attack. The case carries 16 charges including murder and conspiracy. The defence, led by Nthabiseng Mohumane, argued that Sotheni should be considered for bail under “exceptional circumstances,” stating that even accused persons in serious murder and conspiracy cases have been released. They cited the case of Katiso “KT” Molefe, who was granted bail despite facing multiple murder-related charges. According to the defence, Sotheni has strong family responsibilities, including three children, financial difficulties, and a fixed residence in South Africa. They further argued that the State’s case is weak, pointing to inconsistencies, lack of detail, and selective disclosure in the evidence presented. The State opposed bail, arguing that Sotheni may interfere with witnesses and appears to have access to non-public investigative information. Prosecutors raised concerns about knowledge of emergency response details, crime scene information, and a missing docket, suggesting possible links within police structures. The matter remains before the court, with Sotheni still in custody awaiting a decision on bail. The court is expected to weigh the defence’s reliance on the Molefe precedent against the State’s argument that there is a serious risk of interference and inconsistencies in the accused’s affidavits.
