Understand that any potential deal for Fernandes, is independent to one of Éderson. This doesn't mean that both deals will happen, but it isn't either or. Éderson state of play: #MUFC have had fresh positive talks with Atalanta for Éderson with the deal progressing well. This isn't just 'agent talk' which some people are speculating - United are in active negotiations with Atalanta. The deal isn't done but the base fee is expected to be closer to £34M with add-ons as per @MatteMoretto. Éderson would most likely be coming in as a squad option, rather than a starter, is the current feeling. Wilcox, Vivell and the whole recruitment team have approved of the player. The 26-year-old didn't play for Atalanta yesterday due to the ongoing negotiations. He has told his agent he only wants United.

If the reports are correct about his lower valuation, which I personally find too good to be true, then I think the club are lining up Fernandes + Ederson as the Ugarte replacement "£40M" (not strict) midfielder before going big on Anderson or Baleba in the coming months.

Steve Holland staying at Man Utd specifically is super important. That experience he's got is vital for United.

Ederson isn’t Ugarte, he’s better. You’re wasting your time if using seria a comps to judge him completely. Ederson can use his body & arms to protect the ball *decently*, can apply himself in 1v1 defending is quite a pass n move player. Not ideal but still helps raise the floor

This tracks with reporting out of Manchester United on CMs, Laurie Whitwell said yesterday that the club are working on personal terms with players so they can move quickly when the time comes.
I'm not a huge Ederson fan. There's better value in the market, particularly for a player turning 27 in July with a year left on his deal for £40m. I can see the logic in the move for him as the 3rd CM, here's why.
While primarily an #8, he can also play #6 & #10. He can carry the ball forward but able to sit in for his pivot partner. Retains possessions, wins it back & recovers it at high volume. His role versatility is valuable.
I'd rather see what happens with the combination of the three midfielders then go crazy overreacting.
