Happy 40th birthday to Super Mario Bros., which was released in Japan on the Famicom on September 13, 1985! 🥳
Super Mario Bros. was the first NES game I ever played and beat (though Dragon’s Lair was my first game). We took turns playing at my daycare (before I received it as a gift from my grandparents). We were only given one chance through until a game over.
I remember early times playing, and hearing Koji Kondo’s memorable score. Scrolling to the right introduced many players to their first enemy in Super Mario Bros.—a lone Goomba. This simple foe taught players the necessity of avoiding enemies, and defeating them with a carefully placed jump. In those days we learned secrets from our peers, such as where the warp zones were, how to moonwalk, and gained mastery through repetition. It’s timeless, and one I’ll never tire of revisiting ❤️
Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct kicked off with Shigeru Miyamoto commemorating the milestone, and revealed that Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released on the Nintendo Switch on October 2, 2025, including a free 4K-update for Switch 2 owners. Additionally, he announced the next film is titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, set for release on April 3, 2026, as well as upcoming titles Mario Tennis Fever and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and multiplayer-focused additions to Super Mario Bros. Wonder in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
