Pope Leo XIV says the AI age and our response to it is an essential theme for the Church, as she seeks to help everyone grow to full maturity. vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2…

As evidenced by the unbridled promotion and implementation of technology at the expense of human dignity, we are truly experiencing an eclipse of the sense of what it means to be human. It is imperative to recover an understanding of the true meaning and grandeur of humanity as intended by God. It is in this sense that the challenge we currently face is not technological, but anthropological, and it is my hope that the Encyclical Letter to be published within a few days will contribute to answering this challenge.

"The draft has been underway for months, with inputs from dozens of scholars and clerics, and represents the considered judgment of the billion-member-strong Catholic Church. More importantly, that Church is speaking from a two thousand year tradition of reflection upon the meaning of human life. Advanced AI is compelling us to ask what it means to be human..." Ahead of @Pontifex's encyclical on AI, coming out May 25, FLI's Brian Boyd outlines everything you need to know about it - and what to expect 🔗⬇️

'This is the emergence of a new religious formation... but it lacks the humility to name itself as religion, and this is what makes it dangerous.' Excellent on the idol of Isaiah 44 and the techno idolaters from Clayton Chancey @TGC. thegospelcoalition.org/article/ai-imp…

@willjmjones @compactmag Thank you for the reference. I understand the desire to run with the worst case scenario. However, my understanding is that Christianity is inherently forward-looking. There is much more for me to review, including discussing with other parish members.

"[The Church] was one of many institutions to decide early on that human cloning was beyond the pale... Twenty years later, the resulting taboo has largely restrained governments, entrepreneurs, and scientists. Something similar could, and should, be achieved with superintelligence." @willjmjones @compactmag Interesting. I would like to look for what Orthodox bishops have to say. With largely secular students booing at the mention of "AI" in commencement speeches this year, it seems like there is real appetite to move against this. However, it is working against capitalism- Difficult

When talking about AI I sometime hear people discuss "the transition." I'd think "That makes no sense. What stable state would we be transitioning to?" But I eventually realized what they mean, intended or not. It's the transition from a human-run world to a machine-run world.

.@POTUS: "Honoring the British King might seem an ironic beginning to our celebration of 250 years of American independence — but in fact, no tribute could be more appropriate. Long before Americans had a nation or Constitution, we first had a culture, a character, and a creed. Before we ever proclaimed our independence, Americans carried within us the rarest of gifts: moral courage, and it came from a small but mighty kingdom from across the sea."

Where are our AI cancer cures? Summoning a superintelligent genie to cure cancer sounds compelling. It also conveniently avoids confronting the real barriers: no first principles to work from, data gaps, broken incentives, and a regulatory system frozen in the mid-20th century. The good news: AI tools are already delivering across labs and clinics. There are many promising breakthroughs in cancer research underway. And the builders actively fixing the broken system are already at work. We just need to back the right things. Diagnosis and roadmap: curecancer.ai
