Dear airlines far and wide, as long as you charge for checked bags while carryons fly free, people will continue to bring everything they own and the kitchen sink on board. We then are all treated to twenty minutes of watching the gate lice swarm the boarding area while a poor harassed underpaid employee begs the crowd to gate check for free. It is an epic failure of basic incentive structures and we are all embarrassed for having been here for this.

@SubcommanderT I think that's a good analysis. There are the bones of a good film there, but the inconsistent tone and shoddy special effects let it down.

I do like the scope of this movie, and some of the actual cinematography is really good. I also like the "each man hides a secret pain" scene, which is very moving. The movie is like a Season 3 episode: fascinating concept, poor execution, with some cringe.

It's nice to see the introspection here from Shatner (he's done it before), and certainly the movie would've been better with a bigger budget and better effects. But my main issue with it is the *tone*, which is just too inconsistent. Some of the worst humor ever in Trek.
