Because apparently, we’re now pretending we don’t already have multiple forms of ID. Let’s just remind ourselves what already exists: National Insurance number - The number what allows you to get taxed by the way 😉 Driving licences NHS numbers Passports And that’s before you even get into bank accounts, utility records, electoral rolls, and everything else that already ties your identity together. But suddenly, digital ID is the step too far? The argument then shifts to: “Yes, but I could lose my phone!” Fine. Have a physical backup card. “Noooo, I could lose that too!” At that point, what you’re really saying is not that Digital ID is flawed — it’s that you object to the concept of identification altogether, which is absurd in a modern state. What’s actually going on here is far simpler: people have been whipped up into fear by headlines and commentators who frame Digital ID as some kind of dystopian control system, while conveniently ignoring the systems we’ve all been using for decades without a second thought. The reality is this: Digital ID doesn’t suddenly create surveillance — it streamlines what already exists. And the uncomfortable truth? For the overwhelming majority of people going about their lives, it changes very little. The only people who genuinely have something to fear from more robust, verifiable identification systems are those who rely on anonymity to bend or break the rules. Everyone else is just being told to be afraid — and too many are happily playing along.
