The escalation in hostilities across the Middle East and North Africa region following the US and Israel attacks on Iran, and Iran’s retaliation, is putting civilians at grave risk. @amnesty urges all parties to abide by international humanitarian and human rights law. Civilians must be protected. We are closely monitoring developments to assess civilian harm and the broader human rights impact.

Malaysian scholar and human rights lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri was denied entry to Singapore “under current immigration policies" because of her political activism. Singapore’s government described Fadiah as an “undesirable visitor” and accused her of inciting local activists to “undertake disruptive and violent actions to support specific causes.” Fadiah advocates against corruption and Israel’s genocidal actions in Palestine among other human rights issues. She was returning to Singapore to deliver a lecture on her PHD thesis and collect her degree certificate.

A missile strike by the Iranian authorities on the Israeli city of Beit Shemesh must be investigated as a war crime. The strike, on 1 March, killed nine civilians and injured 46 more. The Tiferet Israel synagogue was destroyed, and the bomb shelter beneath it was extensively damaged. In our new investigation, we analyzed verified digital evidence, as well with photos and videos from the site of the attack, and found that an Iranian ballistic missiles was used in the strike.

Despite few amendments to the previous drafts, any death sentences imposed under this law would constitute a violation of the right to life and, when imposed against Palestinians from the OPT, may also amount to war crimes. The international community must exert maximum pressure on the Israeli authorities to immediately repeal this law, fully abolish the death penalty, and dismantle all laws and practices that contribute to the system of apartheid against Palestinians.

Millions of football fans attending the 2026 FIFA Men’s #WorldCup in Canada, Mexico and the USA risk coming face to face with troubling attacks on human rights, not least those stemming from abusive and deadly US immigration policies.

“If we don’t address colonialism, we will never tackle racism.” As part of our ‘Voices of Reparatory Justice’ series, we bring you a perspective piece featuring Jehosheba Bennett, one of the lawyers who represented the 'Metis' women, to whom the Belgium court ordered the government to pay reparations. amnesty.org/en/latest/camp…

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz’s announcement to accelerate the destruction of bridges and homes in southern Lebanon used the Israeli military's record of atrocity crimes in Gaza to threaten people elsewhere. The Israeli military has already extensively destroyed and devastated civilian life in southern Lebanon. The world must not stand by as Israeli leaders shamelessly threaten further destruction and displacement. Israel must not be allowed to violate international law with impunity across the region. World leaders must uphold their international legal obligations to halt Israel’s unlawful destruction of civilian property.

@ErikaGuevaraR For years, social media companies including Meta and YouTube have profited from targeting children and young people with addictive design features that prioritize engagement over wellbeing.

Rather than using blunt tools like banning young teens from social media, States must require a fundamental overhaul of how these platforms operate, including addressing their addictive design. This is the only path to a truly safe social media. amn.st/6019B6eNF5

A US court has ruled that the addictive-by-design nature of Meta and YouTube harmed a young woman and worsened their mental health. In response @ErikaGuevaraR said, “this court decision is clear: these platforms are unsafe by design and meaningful change is urgently needed.”

Trump must retract deeply irresponsible threats that the USA would postpone strikes on #Iran’s power plants & energy infrastructure by 5 days pending the outcome of discussions on the “resolution of hostilities”. The decision to not proceed with such attacks must be based on the USA’s obligations under international humanitarian law to avoid civilian harm - not the outcome of political negotiations. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…

Kyrgyzstani investigative journalist Makhabat Tazhibek-kyzy has been released after serving two years of a six-year sentence on unfounded “mass unrest” charges. She was targeted after reporting on alleged corruption, along with several colleagues. She now faces a travel ban pending retrial. No journalist should face prosecution for reporting on matters of public interest. Makhabat’s detention was unjust - her travel ban must be lifted and the charges against her dropped. The authorities must uphold Kyrgyzstan’s international human rights obligations and ensure a safe environment for independent journalism.

Amnesty International has designated Russian poets Artyom Kamardin, Yegor Shtovba and Nikolai Dayneko as prisoners of conscience. Following their 2022 arrests for reading anti-war poetry in public, Kamardin and Shtovba were sentenced to seven and five-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, and Dayneko four years in a penal colony. Imprisonment for their acts, which were no threat to Russia’s national security, is a clear retaliation to their freedom of expression. The poets must be released immediately and unconditionally, and allegation of torture and ill-treatment must be promptly investigated.

Several countries across the Americas are adopting restrictive legal frameworks to weaken, control, and even dismantle civil society organizations. What we are seeing is a worrying regional pattern. So-called ‘anti-NGO laws’ reflect the rise of authoritarian practices aimed at silencing critical voices and consolidating power at any cost. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
