OPINION: Hezbollah’s violation of the equation. Will we attack in Beirut? Logic says absolutely yes! Yes, pure military-deterrence logic says we should respond forcefully, but the political-American reality greatly complicates it. What’s happening now (as of June 14, 2026): • There are repeated violations by Hezbollah of the fragile ceasefires. •The recent agreements (including those from June) usually include:Hezbollah stops firing and withdraws forces south of the Litani River. • Israel refrains from striking Dahieh (the southern suburbs of Beirut — Hezbollah’s stronghold). • Hezbollah has rejected parts of these agreements, continues guerrilla operations, shooting, and drone attacks. • Israel responds with strikes in southern Lebanon (sometimes dozens of targets per day). • Israel has already struck Dahieh several times in response to violations (for example, in early June), but these were limited and provoked Iranian reactions. Will we attack Beirut? Pure military logic says yes — if Hezbollah significantly breaks the equation (firing deep into Israel, hitting civilians or forces), striking the heart of Beirut (command centers, warehouses, senior officials) is an essential deterrent tool. This is what should have been done earlier and more deeply. Hezbollah only understands force, and deterrence erodes when we limit ourselves. However: Trump is applying heavy pressure against escalation in Lebanon so as not to blow up the deal with Iran. He has already “stopped” planned strikes on Beirut in the past and gotten angry at Netanyahu. The American-Iranian agreement (the digital/temporary one) bundles Lebanon in — Iran wants “quiet” there as part of the deal. A wide-scale attack in Beirut could trigger a direct Iranian response or renewed massive fire, precisely when Israel wants to focus on rehabilitation and long-term preparations. The correct Israeli conclusion: • We shouldn’t “hold back” because of Washington, but we do need timing and wisdom. • A strong and precise response to every violation — including in Dahieh if necessary. • Avoid entering a full-scale war right now if it serves the Iranian-American interest. Build independent capability: Israel must show that there are red lines that are not dependent on Trump. If Hezbollah continues — we need to hit hard, even if it “disrupts” the virtual deal. The equation has changed: Hezbollah is weaker after a year+ of fighting, but it is still not fully deterred. Logic says respond forcefully, but with eyes wide open to the strategic cost.
