The scene is important because it displays how both of them fail to communicate because of their own problems with intimacy.
Asuka is scared of not being seen as desirable or as a woman. She likes Shinji but is too afraid of being weak and vulnerable, so she disguises the kiss as something casual and meaningless.
Shinji wants to kiss Asuka but because of her abrasive walls she puts up gets mixed signals from her. Leaving him confused, on top of the fact he only ever does things when he’s ordered too. He won’t just do what he wants.
Asuka wants him to reciprocate, to get passionate and show he desires her but he doesn’t. He just stands there. So to mask her embarrassment Asuka pretends that it was disgusting.
Great scene I don’t understand how it can be trashy. It’s two people with trauma struggling to connect and express their feelings for each other.
