Thanks so much to the judges who have selected my novel in progress for the Historical Adventure category. #Manumission is set in the years following the global pandemic that ancient historians call the Antonine pandemic. #HNS2026 #AmWriting #HistoricalFiction

Julius Caesar wanted a theatre to rival Pompey’s. The Theatre of Marcellus would be a permanent venue in the Circus Flaminius. After Caesar’s assassination in 44 BC, Augustus, completed it, dedicating it to Marcellus, his putative heir, 13 BC. 📷 my own #AncientRome #Archaeology

The medieval stone robbers did a fairly comprehensive job removing the palatial Roman building currently being excavated at #Carlisle cricket club but this section of the southern wall is now seeing the light of day once again. The building dates to the early 3rd century.

Although there’s no shortage of spite and anger on Twitter, there’s also plenty of kindness. Thanks so much to all the lovely people who took the trouble to write to me about my wedding anniversary. Bless you all.

Anyone for a cuppa? Instantly relatable selection of cups from 1800-1700 BCE, #Phaistos. The cups are decorated with white and polychrome Kamares Ware motifs. The ware is named after the Kamares Cave but the pottery was widely made in Crete. 📷 my own. #FindsFriday #Archaeology

These are tough election results for Labour and I’m sorry to all of those colleagues who have lost their seats. Keir Starmer won a mandate to change our country. We must get on with delivering that mandate - and show how politics can improve people’s lives for the better.

Copper alloy jugs from Roman Corbridge (Coria) - a town and supply base close to Hadrian’s Wall. The items are on display in the excellent site museum. 📸 My own. #RomanBritain #Corbridge #Northumberland

This gold necklace and 3 female figurines were found in a Hellenistic tomb at Vakiotes, #Crete (3rd - 2nd C BC). Vakiotes is a small, traditional settlement and archaeological site near Sokaras at 220M above sea level. 📷 my own. #Archaeology #AncientHistory

If people’s perceptions are shaped by media, then the question we should ask is this: Who owns the media? Because they shape perceptions, influence outcomes to protect their interests. They don’t care about you, except in terms of what they gain from you. Follow the money.
