After Elena died, Carl Tanzler was distraught. He pays for the funeral and constructs an above-ground mausoleum in the Key West Cemetery. He then insists on an airtight casket with an incubator tank full of formaldehyde to prevent the body from decaying.

Elena was diagnosed with tuburculosis and Tanzler believed that he could cure her by bringing x-ray machines to her house, and just... giving her x-rays? Which... Well, it was the 1930s. Then she died. And things got weird.

Tanzler claimed to have been visited by visions revealing the face of his true love: an exotic dark-haired woman. When he met Maria Elena "Helen" Milagro de Hoyos, Tanzler immediately recognized her as the beautiful woman that had been revealed to him in his earlier "visions."

It Happened in Key West is based on a true story! Carl Tanzler was born in the German Empire in 1877. Before settling in the United States, he was interred in Australia during World War I by the British "for safe keeping" alongside Indian and Chinese military officers.

Did you know that Key West was home to Ernest Hemingway and many other famous writers? Hemingway spent his most prolific writing years in Key West during the 1930s, and some say Key West has inspired more writers per capita than any other American city. Fact by @oldtowntrolley

Spanish settlers originally called Key West "Cayo Hueso," which translates to "Bone Island," referring to the bones of members of the Calusa tribe who had once lived in the Florida Keys. English speakers mistook Cayo Hueso, thinking it sounded like Key West, and the name stuck.
