Historians believe the copper plates were taken from Nagapattinam around the late 1600s or early 1700s, when the Dutch East India Company controlled parts of the Coromandel Coast. During redevelopment and fort construction in Nagapattinam, the plates reportedly came into Dutch possession through a missionary named Florentius Camper. Later, they became part of Leiden University’s collection in 1862. India had been trying for many years to bring them back. After detailed provenance research and diplomatic discussions, the Netherlands agreed that the plates had left India during colonial rule without proper consent. Finally, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2026 visit to the Netherlands, the Dutch government officially returned them to India. This return is considered culturally very significant because the plates are among the most important surviving records of the Chola Empire and Tamil heritage preserved outside India.
