The multi-trillion dollar net zero target may be based on an incomplete understanding of why the Earth cools or warms over the long term. New 2026 research (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, January 2026) points to a different master regulator, the oceans. The geological thermostat is governed by calcium levels in the Earth's crust and seafloor - not by the atmosphere or CO2. When the ocean has the right chemistry with greater levels of calcium, it buries far greater quantities of carbon (CO2) in rock. The new study identifies how higher calcium levels removed vast quantities of CO2 from the atmosphere. This was the basic cause of the Late Cenozoic Ice Age, 34 million years ago. It could have also happened before in the Karoo Ice Age (350-250 mya), when global conditions were similar to today. The influence of calcium is a process the UN models barely accounted for and didn't mention. It wasn't just due to a random fall in CO2 levels, it was a fundamental shift in ocean chemistry. The sea’s calcium recipe had changed and this forced the planet to cool. It also rewrote the premise of CO2 as a control knob for temperatures. This new study identifies how a badly mistaken western climate policy may have taken the world down a hugely costly dead end. The net zero target is costing $9.2 trillions a year (estimated total $275 trillions by 2050, McKinsey Global Institute Report, 2022). What are the implications if the CO2 crisis wasn't true to begin with?
