Since the seventh century Arab-Islamic conquest of Syria, and later the Ottoman conquest, Christians have been persecuted by Muslims.
On July 9, 1860, for instance, a Muslim mob swept through the Christian quarters of Damascus, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Violence raged for eight days, leaving approximately 5,000 Christians dead, thousands of shops looted, and churches, houses, and monasteries razed. The sudden and ferocious outbreak shocked the world.
