It’s classified, unless you ask nicely, then it’s not. Likely lost in a random country. Follows ≠ approval. Not a gov agency

For those looking at my profile; I intentionally don’t say where I am from, but it’s clear where I currently live. Whether I’m an expat or not, and what nationality I am, I don’t say. My opinions are based on my exp, and yes can be wrong. Engage on points, not assumptions

@AllThingsCivil @VADave649 Unfortunately the vetbros still think SecDef needs to handle small decisions and “know the troops”. It’s says how little they know of what the job actually is about. SecDef has the JCOS and CCMDs to advise him/her on what’s best for the troops.

@VADave649 It’s a civilian job. Zero military service required. *On purpose* People’s ignorance of the reason behind that is staggering.

@VADave649 It’s infuriating, but the vetbros still think the SecDef should handle all the decisions, as opposed to being a generalist running an org. The JCOS and CCMDs are there to advise on what it’s like being a soldier, and what’s best for the average SM, if needed.

@Sahara_LMR @AlexHollings52 They think others are soft, because today people complain of anxiety. They also don’t realize that the world in 1940 was very different to the world today. In many ways life has become more stressful, and in some ways less stressful. That’s too nuanced though for social media

@AlexHollings52 I’ve always been confused by the intent here too. Like are they wanting Gen Z to storm beaches and get killed/PTSD? What’s the end game with tweets like that.

Less than 39% of American servicemembers throughout WWII were volunteers. The other 61% were drafted. These guys were heroes, but can we stop pretending they went off to war out of the goodness of their hearts and start recognizing that they were just dudes, like you and me, trapped in a terrible time?

@VoriesCraft @JamesSurowiecki Personally I view myself as more of a centrist, because I hold some beliefs that might be seen as liberal, and some that may be seen as conservative.

@VoriesCraft @JamesSurowiecki TBF, no. Everyone has mixed the two, and there is a concerted effort to blur the lines for both sides, so that we only see each other as Nazis and Commies. There are plenty of non-far-left liberals, as I’m sure you’ll agree there are still non-far-right conservatives.

Life on this site is strange. I'm at home tweeting while ripping dvds of the Dean Martin Variety Show to my hard drive while a U.S. infantry officer is obsessively crashing out over my supposed Marxism. (For what it's worth, I'm not a Marxist, I'm a liberal.)

@brollbenny He likely already is. Just because his App Store location says US, doesn’t mean he is actually in the US. It’s an easy thing to spoof. There are a lot of accounts like that on here, and bot accounts based in US servers, but run out of places like Russia, China, etc

@saltyeng_ I couldn’t agree more. The world can be very vibrant, and filled with so many interesting things. We just need to be open minded, less judgemental, curious, and not be a dick.

Everyone has their own strengths, weaknesses, and interests. People should pursue the things they’re passionate about and not spend so much time worrying about what others think. At the end of the day, none of us knows everything. A little humility, a little selflessness, and an appreciation for what others bring to the table goes a long way.

I’ve never really understood this argument. We don’t live in a world where higher education is reserved for a handful of elites. Community colleges, state schools, the GI Bill, employer tuition assistance, scholarships, and online programs have made college more accessible than ever before. Is it perfect? No. But the idea that degrees are some exclusive club is decades out of date. What I find especially strange is the assumption that education and real-world experience are somehow opposites. Take the nuclear Navy. Before I ever touched a reactor plant at Prototype, I spent months in a classroom learning math, physics, thermodynamics, reactor theory, electrical engineering, chemistry, and radiological fundamentals. That wasn’t some academic exercise detached from reality. It was the foundation for everything that came afterward. You don’t learn reactor kinetics by gut instinct. You don’t troubleshoot electrical systems with feelings. You don’t safely operate complex equipment by guessing. You study the theory first, then you learn how to apply it. That’s how the nuclear Navy works. Power School teaches the fundamentals. Prototype teaches application. The fleet teaches mastery. Each phase builds on the one before it. The same thing is true across engineering, medicine, aviation, and countless other professions. Nobody wants the surgeon who skipped anatomy because they preferred “real-world experience.” Nobody wants the engineer designing a bridge based on vibes. The other thing that always makes me laugh is the idea that everyone with a Ph.D. spends their life hiding in academia. Most don’t. They work in industry, government, national labs, engineering firms, hospitals, technology companies, and research organizations solving real-world problems every day. And for the people who do stay in academia? Good. We need them too. Somebody has to teach the next generation of engineers, scientists, physicians, and researchers. The truth is that education and experience aren’t competing concepts. They’re partners. One without the other is incomplete. The modern world wasn’t built by people choosing between knowledge and experience. It was built by people who had both.
John W@txradioguy

@Asst_to_the_RM @infantrydort He's talking about the folks that spend their entire life in academia racking up degree after degree never living or working in reality...then working at some institute or think tank believing they're better than us and smarter than us because of all the letters after their name.

I do agree that all fields of study have value. Personally, I have a major interest in early Christian history, and I find the work historians do in that field absolutely fascinating. People like Bart Ehrman and Elaine Pagels have dedicated their careers to studying ancient texts, languages, cultures, and historical context to help us better understand the origins of Christianity. Whether you agree with all of their conclusions or not, the amount of knowledge and scholarship they bring to the table is remarkable. To me, that’s a great example of why expertise matters. Not every important contribution comes from engineering, medicine, or the hard sciences. Some people help us understand the physical world. Others help us understand our history, our culture, and the ideas that have shaped civilization.

@saltyeng_ Even the media will portray the annoying philosophy professor, and the other cliches. The truth is that all fields are valuable, and add value in particular ways, including something as mocked as gender studies. Everything now has to be tribal though, and it’s very tiring

@saltyeng_ TBF to them, there are many degrees individuals that do look down upon those that aren’t, and consider them stupid. The culture wars have changed the dynamic from a simple in-group out group into this whole war against the educated, especially the humanities.

@FudgeSmith111 @pipe_johnny Like they see what the military does and they forget that the military doesn’t just rely on their forts or bunkers standing around, they have forces to defend them long before they reach the critical points, and they have forces to reinforce, and blah blah blah

@FudgeSmith111 @pipe_johnny Pretty much, but it’s always funny to see the prepper types with their doomsday bunkers and forts. A bunker’s great until I find your entrance and escape hatch/secondary entrance/exit. Then it just becomes a big ol coffin if I have the right tools and equipment.

Just remember that whilst some of the best and brightest work for government, including in the intel & mil communities, so too do some very average people who have outsized egos, and no ethics/morals. Never trust someone is good, or competent based on who they work for.
