Senate Fast-Tracks 1999 Constitution Amendment to Create State Police This Week The Senate has stepped up efforts to establish state police, announcing that the constitutional amendment needed to decentralise policing will be a top priority this week. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed this in Abuja on Monday, stating that the National Assembly has resolved to fast-track the amendment to the 1999 Constitution as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s growing security challenges. According to Bamidele, the proposal enjoys the backing of President Bola Tinubu, state governors and other key stakeholders, reflecting what he described as a broad national consensus on the need for state police. The renewed push comes amid rising insecurity, including t+rrorism, b@nditry, kidn@pping and communal clashes, with recent incidents such as the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State and att@cks on military personnel further strengthening calls for decentralised policing. Nigeria currently operates a single national police force under Section 214(1) of the 1999 Constitution. However, Bamidele said stakeholders across the federation now agree that the time has come to create state police formations. He revealed that extensive consultations involving the National Assembly, the Presidency, the Attorney-General’s office, the Chief of Staff to the President, security agencies and constitutional review committees have advanced significantly, paving the way for legislative action. To accelerate the process, the proposed state police amendment will be separated from other constitutional amendment bills and voted on independently. Once approved by the National Assembly, it will be transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for ratification. Under the constitutional amendment process, the proposal must secure the support of at least two-thirds of both chambers of the National Assembly and be approved by no fewer than 24 state assemblies before it can be signed into law by the President. Bamidele expressed confidence that the amendment would progress quickly, noting that both President Tinubu and most governors support the initiative.
