I was exiting a hardware store today around 12:30pm when two black men approached me in the parking lot. This happened at Ace Hardware in Nicholasville Kentucky. One of the men said, ‘Aren’t you that suspected white supremacist, Amiri King?’ I was very friendly and cordial when I corrected him and told him that he was wrong. I am not ‘suspected.’ ‘I am.’ They seemed more curious than hostile, so I decided to spend time with them and have a constructive conversation. I taught them how 9V batteries worked. I showed them the key to my SUV and told them when you actually buy a vehicle you won’t need a screwdriver. I taught them the meaning of foreign words they have never heard of, like ‘ask’ and ‘per capita.’ In turn, they asked me things like, ‘What’s it like to have consensual sex?’ and ‘What is a dad?’ It was a healthy conversation and we should all be more receptive towards one another if we hope to move forward.
