Forty percent of Marylanders surveyed in a recent UMBC poll are Orioles fans, but one-third of respondents said they do not cheer for any Major League Baseball team. One-quarter of Maryland adults identified as fans of an MLB team other than the Orioles — 16% for the Washington Nationals and 9% for one of the 28 other teams in the league. Poll director Mileah Kromer said the result that 40% of Marylanders are Orioles fans was one she expected. “I don’t think I was surprised at all to see that,” she said during a phone interview. “But I think that there’s a really good positive underlying message for this is that there’s widespread affinity for the Baltimore Orioles. The Board of Estimates approved $230,271 for five different injury claims against Baltimore City, though $455,271 total in settlements were recommended to be paid to plaintiffs by the city’s legal department. Each lawsuit was a settlement, meaning the city did not lose a lawsuit but instead chose to pay the plaintiff to end litigation and resolve the disputes out of court. Plaintiffs suing the city were all injured in some form or fashion by city infrastructure or personnel. Read more: bit.ly/4c2fTjq 📸: Baltimore Sun staff

Millions of people with dementia work hard to complete everyday tasks, from taking medication to locking the door. For families, keeping track of these small but essential routines can be exhausting, and missing a step can have serious consequences. Seeing a need through community and family, four juniors from Mount Hebron High School — Saanvi Kakarlapudi, 16; Ahana Roy, 16; Amitha Sabbani, 16; and Tanvi Anand, 17 — developed MindLink, a wearable device designed to act as an automatic to-do list. The device gives those with dementia a larger safety net and increases their independence, Kakarlapudi said: “It allows the dementia patient to go on about their own lives and complete their own tasks and live their lives by themselves, self-sufficiently.” Read more: bit.ly/484ek3m 📸: Courtesy of Project Paradigm and The Paradigm Challenge

Gerry Sandusky, the radio play-by-play voice of the Ravens since 2006 and longtime sports director at WBAL-TV 11, said Wednesday morning that he is retiring. His final 11 p.m. newscast is set for April 17. “This isn’t a decision I made lightly. I have loved sharing the stories that shape Baltimore sports with viewers, and I have loved every minute of sharing Ravens games with listeners. But the time has come for me to pass those batons and pour more of my attention on my family,” Sandusky said in a statement posted by WBAL-TV 11. “For my broadcasting career, ‘The hay is in the barn.’ And it feels right.” Read more: bit.ly/4tmGleS

A quadruple amputee and athlete charged with murder in Charles County is at the center of a “clear-cut case of self-defense,” his lawyers said Wednesday. Dayton Webber, whose success at cornhole has made him a national figure of inspiration, was arrested at a Virginia hospital last month after shooting and killing Bradrick Michael Wells inside his car. After hearing from both sides, Charles District Judge Patrick Devine said while he is aware of Webber’s story and perseverance, he was concerned by both the allegations and Webber’s decision to leave the state. He ordered the defendant, who appeared in court virtually, be held without bond. Read more: bit.ly/4s8ZEXV 📸: Charles County Sheriff's Office via AP
