This is my hometown, and we love vigils and bullshit.
Eight years ago, my son Joaquin Oliver was murdered after being shot four times in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Last December, Donovan Joshua, a friend of Joaquin whose life was profoundly altered after the school shooting, died by suicide with a gun when he was only 26 years old.
On April 1st, Nancy Metayer, who happened to be Donovan’s sister, was found dead in her home in Coral Springs after her abusive partner decided to use a gun and end her life.
Same town. Same destiny.
There is no difference between these tragedies. They hurt equally, and they are all the result of a community that forgets too fast and too conveniently.
We answer with vigils, candles, and prayers to distract ourselves from a political and social force that promotes arming our town so we can all protect one another from each other.
I do not buy that narrative, I say FU@K THAT. YES, FU@K THAT. And fuck anyone who decides to treat this as normal.
If we do not reject this NOW, the next victims will be on us because, in my reality, your thoughts, prayers, and inaction are called complicity.
