Welfare update: I'm back from Delta, Ohio. Both air conditioners are in the windows, and my wife came home to a cool house. She's happy. The dog's happy. The cat's happy. I'm happy....and safe from bodily harm.

@Supersonic_Red Family time is the time that matters most. Friday night is still called Pizza night. Family traditions hold the generations together. My 30 yo son and 90 yo Mom are still the holiday pie makers.

My childhood had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, including time in a foster home. But I know my parents did the best they could based on their own childhood experiences. My mother was a brilliant screenwriter and a functional addict, something that was common in Laurel Canyon in the 60s and 70s. My father went from being a farm boy, born and raised in the South, to becoming an executive. Both were the first in their families to go to college and eventually earn doctorates. Both were driven, each for their own reasons. I took the best from them, forgave the worst, and learned the lessons. I had a son, adopted two more, and raised a bonus son who followed me into the USAF. I gave them every minute I could when I wasn’t deployed because, at the end of the day, the only thing your children really want is you. Your presence. Your time. Your love. We built memories together, stacking them one by one. I showed them the things I loved in life and surrounded them with good men and women so they could draw from their wisdom too. I taught them to be a team and showed them that faith makes the impossible possible. On Fridays, we would have king crab legs. We’d cover the huge square coffee table with newspaper over a layer of towels, sit on the floor, and eat pounds of crab meat. My sons looked forward to it all week. Happily eating like a bunch of barbarians, fingers soaked in melted butter as they laughed and talked about the week that had just passed. Decades have gone by. I have fifteen grandchildren now. My home is filled with laughter and chaos when they visit. I watch them play from my patio and smile as I hear their fathers tell their children stories from their own childhoods. The crab dinners always come up. I honestly couldn’t ask for anything more. The years go by faster than you think. The memories stay. Good morning.
