Leo Baeck refused to leave. By the late 1930s, the most prominent rabbi in Germany—and one of the leading Jewish theologians in the world—had standing offers from Britain, the United States, and Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. He had been arrested by the Gestapo five times. His synagogue had been burned. His wife had died in 1937. His daughter and grand-niece were already safe in England. He had a passport, connections, and every reason to go. He stayed. Born in 1873 in Lissa (then German Province of Posen), Baeck was the son of a rabbi. A brilliant scholar with a doctorate in philosophy, he became a rabbi at twenty-four, served as a chaplain in the German Army during World War I, and published “The Essence of Judaism” in 1905, establishing himself as a major liberal Jewish thinker. In 1912 he was called to Berlin as senior rabbi of the city’s largest Jewish community, a position he held for over thirty years. When the Nazis took power in 1933, Baeck was sixty. He accepted leadership of the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden, the central organization defending Jewish life in Germany. For the next decade he negotiated with Nazi officials, protected his community where possible, and helped roughly one-third of Germany’s Jews emigrate while it was still feasible. He helped them leave. He remained. After Kristallnacht in 1938, with his synagogue destroyed and his family gone, he had nothing left but his people. In January 1943, at age seventy, he was deported to Theresienstadt. In the camp—presented by the Nazis as a “model” settlement but in reality a way station to death—Baeck refused most privileges. He performed hard labor, pulling a hearse that carried bodies. He taught unauthorized lectures in crowded barracks on philosophy, ethics, Plato, Kant, and Jewish thought, drawing hundreds who later credited his words with giving them the will to survive. He wrote his major work This People Israel: The Meaning of Jewish Existence on scraps of paper. In early 1945, his name appeared on an execution list. The date was set for May 9. On May 8, the Red Army liberated Theresienstadt. Baeck immediately intervened to stop prisoners from killing the camp guards. He insisted that the restoration of Jewish life must not begin with revenge. He stayed in the camp until the elderly and sick were evacuated, then joined his daughter in England. He never returned to Germany. For the last eleven years of his life, he taught, wrote, and helped rebuild Progressive Judaism from London. He died in 1956 at eighty-three. Of the 140,000 Jews sent to Theresienstadt, only about 9,000 survived. Leo Baeck was one of them. He had been offered escape at sixty-five, sixty-seven, and sixty-nine, and each time refused. He said he would leave Germany only when he was the last Jew remaining. He nearly kept that promise.
