Wist je dat Australië ooit Nieuw-Holland heette? 🐨🇳🇱 In 1606 zette Willem Jansz als eerste Europeaan voet aan land. Later gaf ontdekkingsreiziger Abel Tasman het enorme onbekende land in 1644 een naam: Nieuw-Holland. Toch bleven de Nederlanders niet. De Britten wel, maar de Nederlandse naam hield nog lang stand. En er is meer! 🇳🇿 Nieuw-Zeeland draagt nog steeds haar Nederlandse naam, én: 🏝️ Tasmanië heette ooit Anthoonij van Diemenslandt (later Van Diemen's Land) en was vernoemd naar de toenmalige gouverneur-generaal van Nederlands-Indië. Die naam verdween pas nadat het eiland een beruchte Britse strafkolonie werd… en een frisse start nodig had. Dus werd het vernoemd naar de man die door gouverneur-generaal Anthonie van Diemen op pad was gestuurd: Abel Tasman! 🇳🇱 Op deze oude kaart kun je goed zien hoe Nederland de wereldkaart mede ingevuld heeft 👇🏻

De zwaarste straf die het Nederlandse bestuur kon opleggen, was hun die vlag afnemen. Dat gebeurde alleen wanneer zij zich schuldig hadden gemaakt aan koppensnellen.
