@MatScouts1 Sucks, honestly there are 30-50 guys going to make out well. It's just sad to see the small schools lose AA like Lock Haven. If I win the Powerball, Lock Haven will start beating Penn State

it varies by school. there's only like 4 schools that can pay a lot, and another 5 or 6 that can pay anything close to that consistently. So if you're in the portal right now, you probably want to ink your deal first/sooner because the significant options dry up fast
Mike McMullan@MikeMcM_

I guess I’ll just try given no one is answering…Does this seem right? -$10-40k / year for NCAA qualifier - $40-80k / year for round of 12 - $80-200k / year for AA - $200-400k / year for NCAA finalist / champ? Maybe these fabled “Iowa money bags” are outliers…just trying to get a sense of the current market. Welcome any thoughts

If the NCAA Wrestling Championships were moved to a weekend where March Madness was NOT taking place, would TV viewership INCREASE? Please vote, very important poll.

@wrestlingnomad Why not create a Cael Sanderson career award to separate the 2? I agree with @ShaneSparksBTN on being a single year award. With the amount of 4 timers we have had recently and been close to it makes sense to honor their career accomplishments.

Taking out the past accomplishments criteria of the Hodge is really fucking stupid. Spencer, Roman, Imar, Gwiz... How many of these guys have to lose before we acknowledge that it's harder to stay atop the mountain than climb it? The bigger target, more film, more wear&tear.

@patcolicchio @SpeyWrestle @jayborschel If the step out didn't stop action and both wrestlers could still score after the point was awarded then it wouldn't ruin edge wrestling, just make it even more exciting when it happened.

@SpeyWrestle @jayborschel Let’s not pretend there can’t be cool edge wrestling with a step out either. I feel like I remember JO being a wizard at oleing people on the edge in freestyle

Sometimes it feels like we change rules because we don’t like or are biased against certain styles. We don’t like spaghetti wrestling so we make up neutral danger. We don’t like edge wrestling tactics, so we make up push/step out rules.

@notawrestler_x @matbomber42 @wrestlingnomad @wrestlingbypir8 133 picked up 4 big freshman and didn't really lose anyone from last year. 157 picked up Duke, Robidaeu, Larkin, but lost Kasak and Blaze. Both were considered down weights last year. 133 got significantly better. 157 not much of a change. Is there such thing as a best weight?

@matbomber42 @wrestlingnomad @wrestlingbypir8 You lose credibility when you say 165 was as good as 133. 133 or 157 were the clear best two weights with 133 having a better top end and 157 having more depth. 165 wasn't in the top 5. Mitch has a great case for Hodge, but hyping his weight class isn't a winning argument.

@wrestlingnomad @notawrestler_x @matbomber42 @wrestlingbypir8 I agree 100% Every weight class is roughly the same. 133 is top heavy with the big 4 freshman. 184 same. 157 only Duke separated himself. Larkin and Robidaeu were still in close or losing matches with guys like watters, Zerban, Webster, etc. Last year 157 seemed weak too.

@scarletharrier @jasonnolf @Benaskren Better scrambling isn't worse for the sport but the rules should even be with the wrestling. The average national qualifier these days would just wreck the average all American from 20 years ago.

@jasonnolf And more dangerous to shoot. We need a partial takedown, an alternative way to score. Best way to do that is a step out point. Just don't stop action when the step out happens and allow both guys to score after the step out. True continuation.

There was a total of 8 takedowns in the NCAA finals (excluding MM match). 8 takedowns in 9 matches. 3 matches had 0 takedowns. Thats a rules issue. Takedowns are not incentivized.
MatScouts@MatScouts1

@johnnidijulius where is your data that scoring is down since 3pt takedown. i guarantee you scoring in the finals was up this year.

@johnnidijulius it's not anecdotal. it's very in-your-face. some kids go get it. others are scared. it's not the rules. legislation is not the cure for everything.

@MatScouts1 @johnnidijulius Currently our legislation is driving kids to not wrestle. It's not because they don't want it bad enough. Everyone is scared to lose. Rules should encourage you to wrestle even though you might lose. Right now if you don't wrestle you might not lose. You might win in TB.

@johnnidijulius What do you think of having a step out but don't stop action let both wrestlers score after the step out until both wrestlers are fully out? True continuation. Ref can call it dead if action completely stops. Also reset the step out by one guy stepping inside the inner circle.

@johnnidijulius Love this. But I think we should push for the step out even if there is a chance we get a bad outcome. I think we need some sort of partial takedown, and that's what happened with freestyle. Push out is a partial takedown.

@handsometuesda9 Its his first title and his only chance to lose was to shoot on the kid that had been backing the entire match. It's not like Merrill was going to shoot on him.

@gustafson_zac @johnnidijulius This is why I think college wrestling obsession with shooting to determine who is stalling is misplaced. In freestyle it's about controlling center. Far less subjective and more indicative of actually stalling. Really hard to be evade action you are pushing into the other guy.

I love wrestling. But this shows a lot about our ruleset. I want to appreciate the NCAAs and not immediately critique everything, but stalling is a problem. And the answer is to not call more stalling, it is to incentivize less stalling by rewarding offense.
MatSavant@MatSavant

Scoring in the finals was NOT up this year. It was only slightly higher than 2025, which was one of the lowest in recent memory. 2026 was the third lowest median points scored since 2013, and the 4th lowest in average points. This is despite having the highest point total in a final in over 13 years with the Messenbrink TF.
